 Storing New Buffet R-13
Author: BandMom
Date:   2005-01-15 18:50

I have the opportunity to purchase a brand new Buffet R-13 for my son. He and his teacher have picked one out that they really like. The problem is, due to his grades in school, I really do not want to hand him a brand new professional clarinet at the moment. Can you safely store a newly purchased R-13 if it is not going to be played for several months? I would store it somewhere inside the house, not in a garage or basement and definitely away from the baseboard heating. Would storing the instrument without playing it be detrimental to the clarinet in any way?

I don't see how storing it in your house would be any different from storing it in a store. If you are concerned, you may want to add some orange peels to the case once a week, or use a dampit.

Store it in your Son's room.

Start with the empty case.

As he makes improvement in his studies, add a section of the clarinet to the case (so he may see progress).

Each time he backslides on the effort, subtract a piece from the case.

This may be the time to introduce a "contract" for performance based reward.

PS - Did he spend any of HIS money to purchase the instrument?

BandMom, as long as you store it in an environmentally friendly area as you say, it will be absolutely fine. Our inventory can go for weeks if not months before somebody tries and buys a horn. As long as your son follows a careful break-in routine once he gets his grades up to snuff and gets the horn, it'll be fine.

Give him the horn.

Pick a different means of insuring good grades.Such as:
No computer time that is spent with instant messaging.
Limit TV time.
No going out at night during school weekdays.
Take away the cell phone.

I have to agree with Alseq; depriving him of the new instrument may discourage him. I think it would depend on his level of ability; if he is pretty good and he realizes that his current instrument is holding him back (as was the case with myself eight years ago) then I would definitely give it to him. The frustration of poor hardware could make him give up all together. If you give him the horn now, he will (hopefully) excel in music, which will most likely cause him to excel in most other areas of his life.

Just my opinion . . .

Geez, Mom!! So....I guess you put a deposit on it and leave it at the store until his grades improve? I wouldn't bring it home if I wasn't going to let him play it.

SB . . . talk about teasing a person into insanity! I know I wouldn't be able to handle that level of teasing. I could see that in other areas of life . . . first you see the car sitting on blocks in the driveway. . . then comes the left rear tire . . . then the right front . . . then you get a key to the doors . . . AAHHH!!!!

Unless the grades are a direct result because of him playing the clarinet, I don't see why he should be deprived of one.

I'm no parent, but I am a product of two of them. And I say that depriving a child of something that is unrelated to their schoolwork is not a good idea. I say find the source of the problem, and work with THAT.

I do not think that anyone should tell you how to raise your child. I don't think you were asking for advice on how to raise your child, were you? Your original question was if it is ok to store a clarinet in your house for a while. As you said, if you keep it away from direct heat and in a place like a closet or something, it would be the same as keeping it at the music store. You give the clarinet to him whenever you feel is right. You are the parent. I don't think it will scar him for life if you wait till he does better in school. It is up to you.

Yeah. Dano's right.

Sorry about that (thanks for bringing me/us back to reality, Dano). As per storing the clarinet, if a warehouse could do it, so can you. There are a BUNCH of ideas on storing clarinets. Also remember whenever he does start playing it, to give it a break-in period. There's a lot of speculation as to whether break-in periods are NEEDED or not, but in my eyes, taking extra care can't HURT the clarinet.

Sometimes people don't ask the appropriate question as for example, "When did you stop beating your wife?" I guess I didn't see the point in purchasing the horn....at all....if it was just going to be stored at home. Let's say you did that and then months later you or the kid open the case to discover that the wood is cracked. What do you do then?
The "appropriate" home environment, in my opinion, is to play the horn every day or almost every day and to care for it properly.

I don't want to try to tell you how parent your son, but

I agree. I'm not fortunate enough to have parents that care about my music enough to even consider buying me an R-13, a good bass clarinet (actually, I might get one as my graduation present, but thats over a year and a 1/2 away), or even a step up from my current Bb student model YCL-26. This is really because they are almost against my musical interest 100%, because they think it takes time away from my horses. If you are going to buy your son a great clarinet like that, let him play it. If he's not practicing clarinet, odds are he's going to be watching T.V., playing computer games, or X-Box games of some sort, and not concentrating on his schoolwork to begin with.

I forgot to add that you must be a great parent even considering such an expensive and pro quality clarinet for your child. Good choice.

Book 'em Dano.

Post something here.....advice is what you often get....requested, or not. It is the nature of the internet beast.

Now, I was not asked for my advice....BUT...rather that asking the poster "gee, I am not sure about the logic of this...tell me why? etc"
it is much more expedient (less lag time) just to jump in with unsolicited babble than to engage a protracted debate session.

Consider it a global watercooler discussion.

I suppose that is the nature of the beast...internet that is. I thought that just answering the question without going into "I know you didn't ask but.." was the most expedient (less lag time) way of answering a question. Silly me. Maybe that is why I don't hang out around watercoolers. Unsolicited advice. By the way, I most cerainly will book 'em.

You should humidify it. Dampits dry out in a day or so - not practical.

See this thread which has a humidifier which lasts a week. Use it all winter till the heating season is over.

Or hopefully till his grades warrant the gift. If the Clarinet was already given to him than it would be unreasonable to hold it for better grades as you don't want musical practice to be a reward nor a punishment, but as a carrot to improve, I don't see anything wrong with waiting.

Here's the thread for the humidifier:

Now they are made with Lexan which is used for bullet resistant glass (ya know, those bad neighborhoods while walking to the car - your case could save you one day! ;) )

For those who might be questioning why I would purchase a new clarinet and then not give it to my son here is a bit of background information. We have a friend who is selling his 5 month old Buffet Festival but needs to sell it quickly. Since I will in all likelihood be upgrading Brian's clarinet within the next year or so we decided to look into the Festival simply because it is for sale NOW. We arranged a trip to the music store with his teacher to try R-13's versus Festival. Brian decided he liked the R-13 better and he and his teacher feel that they found one of exceptional quality. Now the dilemma.

You can agree or disagree with me on this point, but I do not feel it is in Brian's best interest to be given a brand new $2000 clarinet when he is not working even close to his potential in school. I also would have preferred him to earn some money to go towards the purchase. I think it would help him get over the attitude that we as parents should just give him things because he feels he should not have to wait. The point of buying the clarinet but not giving it to him right away was simply because it would eliminate the need to go shopping again in search of the perfect clarinet. Would we find another wonderful R-13 in six months, a year or whenever we decide the time is right to give him one, I would think we would. However, if it could be purchased now and stored for a while without harming the instrument it would simply save us the quest for the best instrument available at the time and possibly avoid a price increase.

I do thank you though for some of your suggestions. Perhaps no television or IM'ing would also help him focus more on school work.

If you don't crack the case, the instrument will be easier to resell.

If he didn't cough up any of HIS money for this, the precedent is set -
slide on the one job he has, and Mom will still cave.

I don't think it's a tease - Parents are in charge, kids are entitled only to what Mom (or Dad) considers appropriate.

I can't count the number of children I've seen come to lessons with expensive instruments that they neither care for properly nor practice apon.

Incentive for effort is valuable at all ages...

A few bits of camphor in the case will discourage moth larvae from invading the pads. Other than that, it should store quite well if the case is sound.
