 Bernstein Recording
Author: bala

I was curious if there is a classic recording of the Bernstein sonata, just as there is the famous recording of the Mozart concerto by Marcellus. If there is not just one, could anyone suggest some quality recordings of this piece? Thanks so much!

amazon.com
select 'classical music'
and put 'bernstein sonata' into the search box, and you'll get a few hits

I think the Stanley Drucker recording, made in the '60s with Leonid Hambro on piano, would qualify. Both artists played under LB in the NY Philharmonic (Hambro was the orchestra pianist for a while) and I believe Drucker was a long-standing friend. I doubt it gets more stylish. It was available on LP on Columbia Odyssey; don't know whether or not it is currently available on CD.

Best,
Anders

In 1997 Drucker did a recording of the Bernstein Sonata on New York Legends:

There also is a very early, authentic recording with Bernstein, piano, and David Opperman, for whom the work was written. Opperman was, at one time, married to Judy Holiday, the "Born Yesterday" and "Bells are Ringing" star. For a recent recording, Larry Combs performance is excellent and better in tune than Drucker's.

Karin Dornbusch's recording is very good too.

It's a pretty easy piece. Cool sounding, but not very hard to play.

The recording with Bernstein was by David Oppenheim.

Kalmen Opperman would have done a great version, too, but he never recorded it.

Richard Stolzman did an amazing recording of the "Bernstein Sonata".

Stoltzman made a recording which was an arrangement for Orchestra and Clarinet - sort of making it into a Concerto.

Is that the one or did he also do one with Piano?

Thanks, Ken. You are absolutely right that it was Oppenheim not Opperman...wrong "Oppe.." on my memory page today. At least the "David" part was right. And yes, it was Oppenheim who was married to Judy Holiday.

David,

He does also have a recording with piano on the "Amber Waves" album with his long-time accompanist Irma Vallecillo.

Best regards,
Jack Kissinger
