Well Leo, my student is 86 so you are a real youngster in my book. He wanted me to teach him to play but he couldn't read music. I made some tapes for him to listen to and try to copy. He had the fingering down okay. Slow scales, some musical advice from me, and I found this to be a really inspiring project. We worked together every Wednesday afternoon for a couple of years. His "final" exam was to play along with a few songs on the Preservation Hall Jazz Band CD. He did okay. I was proud of him. Now he's trying the alto sax. He's doing okay with it and making big noises. I think if you have a real desire to play, you'll do it.

Hello Carol. That is what I wanted to hear.See my problem is that when I was
14 years old I was walking on the beach of MonteCristy Dominican republic
and there was a man with a portable radio on, and as I was going by I
hearted a melody and I stop and listen until the end.then I told in my mind
I wish I can play the clarinet so I can play that song even if the only one
I play.
Now that I just got my 12 year old son a Baldwin piano I got my self the
clarinet I always dream of, I am getting a clarinet teacher I am ready to
take off.
By the way ,the song I listen then was.
"Stranger on the Shore" by Ackel Bilk...........Feliz Navidad..........Leo

You've come to a great place to hang out, Leo. Compared to some of us, you're still a youngster... 
There are many folks here who, like you, started to play an instrument later in life. The number one aim in my musical experience is to have fun with music. I can't think of a more challenging tune for a beginner or a more fun piece to start out with, than "Stranger on the Shore". Best wishes to you, and a Feliz Navidad too. Thank you for sharing, Leo. You are a fine example of just how music can affect one's life and I hope to hear more from you in the near future.

Actually, Stranger on the Shore is a good tune to pursue in learning the instrument. All the notes are natural (no sharps or flats) and in your first register until you get to the bridge. (where you hear the horn go up high)
Get that much done, and the bridge will give you plenty of incentive to work on the high register.

My first piece of advice would be to find a good teacher who takes adult students. The clarinet can be a finicky beast and become very frustrating and many times it is due to simple issues that a teacher can get you over quickly.
I took up the clarinet again after a 30+ year hiatus and began taking lessons almost from the start and it is a decision I have not regretted. With the right teacher and a fair bit of practice, you'll be on that beach in no time...BG!

Rick .I am getting a private teacher that will come to my home and some time to my office,all I ask is that the teacher has experience and patient.
And one day soon I hope you will hear that Leo is on his way to the MonteCristy beach. "HAPPY HOLYDAYS".........

I also started learning at 57. That was five years ago and I really enjoy playing. I went through some frustrating times but made it. I now play in a local windband and I am still learning - I suppose I always will.

Hi Leo,
I started 2 years ago on my 50th birthday - just a little younger than you but not much !
I've an advantage in that I can read music but I've got a little added problem in that I've very little feeling in my left thumb and index finger - but has that stopped me ? NO !
It was tricky learning where the register key was for a while as I couldn't feel it but I've well sorted that now.
Like you "Stranger on the Shore" was my goal too and I've got there !!!
Last Christmas I managed it playing the high notes an octave lower but this Christmas - no problem I can get the high notes reasonably well and I'm told it sounds pretty good.
I've done it and I'm sure you can too - motivation is the key - if you want to do it I'm sure you will - incidentally I'm completely self taught too !!! Not the most sensible way to learn I know but work committments don't enable me to have lessons.
I hope you get as much pleasure out of it as I do - good luck !

Thank you Sue.that is the help I need, Last night I made my 1st noise my wife look at me with the Conner of her eyes and said "YOU WAITED 43 YEAR FOR THAT NOISE ??" But my 12 year old son Jean Carlos said," Papa don't listen to her you sound grate" and My daughter Michelle{20} said that for the 1st time was "A OK"
So no matter what my wife said ALL SYSTEM GO......Will keep you inform......Leo

Well John . In my home there is all kind of noise my son at the piano and me with the clarinet,we call it "THE P BAND" P for Pena when we start making noise My wife screen from the next room "HAPPY NEW YEAR" We don't know what she meant by that and we don't care

It's good to read that you're starting the clarinet. I'm in high school and have played the clarinet for seven years. I actually wanted to play the oboe but my parents wouldn't let me. While the clarinet is my first love, I am now learning the oboe, as well as alto sax and trumpet. Good luck with your clarinet studies!
