banjo strings

Does anybody know what notes the 4 open strings of a banjo play?

The tenor banjo is a 4-string banjo with a length of about 22 inches. The tenor banjo is tuned to CGDA (lowest to highest).

The plectrum banjo is a 4-string banjo of about 26 inches. It is tuned CGBD (lowest to highest).

It may also be tuned DGBE, like the first four strings of a guitar--this is called the Chicago tuning ...GBK

I don't mean to be the one to break the serene atmosphere in here but,

...some clarinetists have been know to fiddle with the banjo...

(The 5-string banjo is ordinarily tuned CGBD-G, like plectrum)

Q. How do I know when my banjo strings are at the proper tension?

A. When wound around the player's neck, they should be tight enough to cut off all playing.
