Good Day! As some know I suffer from RA and in addition to the hand/joint/tendon problems I have recently had to quit playing and/or practicing as mouth sores have developed due to my medications. Quit? I'd rather not. My "Rhummy" has reduced some meds and increased others. No joy as yet (other than the minor one of losing 15 pounds). I'm almost tempted to try to double on a 'bone' or euphonium--just something with a BIG mouthpiece that does not go into the mouth. No Tubas please. Comments and suggestions please. Off board if desired.

Bob - Better plan could be to treat the mouth lesions to allow easier playing. Tell you dentist you play clar and speak to your him/her regarding advice on the best rinses etc for you.
Some dentists might even have the local pharmacist make up a special formula for you.
Keep smilin'

Just some thoughts, which may not apply if RA is advanced: 1) Try double embouchure on clarinet to ease sores 2) Oboe might provide less friction internally 3) Flute would be zero contact, but uncomfortable posture, bagpipes would be as minimal as possible 4) If you go brass, how about French horn?--fairly restful posture, medium mouthpiece, and you can still fit into a ww quintet. Best of luck!

"Try double embouchure on clarinet to ease sores".
Tried that first. Inside lower lip ulcerated, teeth forced into sores. Don't work.

This might be a stupid question, but have you tried keeping up your B vitamins? Mouth sores can be sometimes alleviated by taking a B complex, although I know you have other things going on. Good luck.

A belated Happy New Year to all. Here is a 2005 Update. Sores better but still present. Did what I threatened. Bought a King 606 Trombone. Now I need to learn Bass Clef (which I never did even though I play Bass clarinet) and how to play this new gadget. Long Live 2005. Question to Brass doublers, is there a Trombone BB similar to this one?

Bob,
Trombone is a blast. You'll get the hang of bass clef in no time. Best of luck to you.

Yes, blessings on you. My mom suffered from RA for 35 years. All kinds of meds and even those that broke her mouth out like you describe. She had the dr. to change her to something other than what she was taking because it also irritated her stomach lining. He did switch her to something besides the mouth sore med and she didn't have the problem again. There's lots of meds out there for RA these days. They're tricky, but don't hesitate to talk to your dr. about changing you over---now that you've switched to trombone it might not matter--but you might also have the stomach irritation problem.
