All you clarinetists out there...what are your mouthpiece/ligature/reed setups? Do you use different setups for different modalities (eg. classical orchestral vs. Gershwin vs. small ensemble, etc.). Please indicate your experience (professional player, beginner, advanced student, etc.) Thank you! Sandra

Bob, lets hope that this research will help some of our cl'ists. For Bb sop., MP's, I prefer my Ralph Morgan BG Benny Goodman to my Woodwinds G8 and B6, my invert Bonade to the Luyben, and Lurie/LaVoz 2 1/2 + [depending on what the music demands] for my LeBlanc L7/ Selmer CT's [depending on with whom I'm playing]. Sandra, I classify myself as an old-timer semi-pro, not now as good as I remember!! For Bass cl, my Bundy 3 seems better than my Sel C*, Lurie lig, with soft reeds [seldom above the staff ] for my Sel 33 to Eb. Hope others will give more pro setup descripts. Don

I consider myself a "professional amateur." I think I play well, but I don't play for money. I've been playing for over 10 years.

I play just for fun in 2 community bands. For concert band I still prefer my old Freeman M-100, harrison lig., 2RV MPc, VD #2.5. For jazz I switch to a duckbill MPc with part of an "Italian" looking name on it. Still don't know who made it but it can compete with the brass very easily. On my EEb contra, I use the stock Leblanc MPc with full sized contra reed if playing tuba or string bass parts. For bari sax parts or something that has few low notes I prefer the Selmer C* with well worked over LaVoz med-soft reed.

I'm a performance student at university. My setup is a Buffet Festival Bb and RC A, using a Viotto B3 mouthpiece with Vandoren and Grand Concert tradional 4's. However, I just found out that the hardness of my reeds is making me tend t play sharper..so I'm gradually trying to adjust to softer reeds.

Just so you folks know, I am semi-pro. I played professionally for a few years, until I opened a retail shoppe. I teach private lessons and have 16 students. I play a Buffet R-13 (both A and Bb), and both have Moennig barrels. I use Vandoren mpc B-45, or B-45 with Morre (2.5) or Vandoren Black Master reeds (3.5). I currently use an inverted Bonade ligature. I've considered and tried many other setups. I play primarily classical/orchestral and woodwind quintet pieces. I'm considering another change. Also, researching for my students who are young beginners up to advanced. Thanks! Any classical/jazz players out there who use the same setup for all pieces? Or...what are the different setups that you use?

If you do a little research here on the BBoard you'll find this topic comes up fairly regularly, so you might want to combine the previous thread with this one if you're actually doing research.
Other than pure curiosity I don't know what good it'll do, though.

I've played clarinet for 40 years. Started out on a Selmer Bundy plastic/wood combo in 1961 that my parents bought on a rent/purchase deal from the same music store I still frequent. I've played on just about everything, but currently am playing on my new Greenline R-13 with a couple of mouthpieces. I use a Greg Smith Kaspar and a Greg Smith grenadilla wood mouthpiece with Vandoren V-12 reeds and a BG Super Revelation ligature.

Old amateur, mostly chamber, orchestra, and solo, plus I practice alot. R13, Moenig barrel, Stowell-Wells-Snyder or Borbeck 13 mouthpiece, shoestring ligature, Blackmaster 3, V12 31/2, or Charpen 31/2 when I can find them. They are no longer made. No one in their right mind uses them, so if you find any, don't buy them but let me know.

I have an R-13 (very nice horn by the way). I use a Gregory Smith (facing 1) mp, Vandoren Black Master or V12 #4 reed, Bonade lig, and a Moennig barrel. This gives me a bright sound. If I want a darker sound I clip the tip of a V12 and use a Rovner Dark lig. I am an advanced student.

I am a serious amateur who plays in university ensembles but does graduate studies in science.
I play almost exclusively classical music.
My main setup is a Vandoren M15-13, Vandoren traditional and V12 #4, optimum ligature bonade-like plate.
I almost never change mpc but sometimes use a fabric ligature in chamber music settings.

Lets see, I can't really say my level, thats all relative. I will say that this will be my almost fourth year playing, and I'm working on the copland concerto and Rossini. I'll let you jusdge my playing status. Anyways, I use either a greg smith kasper, or a vintage chedville that came with my old buffet, and as of right now a luyben black inverted. I'm working on getting my hands on an Eddie Daniels ii ligature. And I am definitesly a classical clarinetist. I think my teacher plays on the say basic setup, I neve bother asking because he floats between diferent things.

Adult beginner, started in April. I have previous wind experience so am making fair progress, I think; I'm working on pieces around grade 5-6 in the English examination system. I practice an hour a day and I take lessons.
Yamaha YCL26 II MSUK plastic clarinet, Vandoren 5RVLyre/13/88 mouthpiece, BG "standard" fabric ligature, Mitchell Lurie 3.5 reeds.
Now let me ask a question: how do you rate the difference between the Mitchell Lurie standard and premium reeds?

1969 Buffet R-13 with a Vandoren B45 mouthpiece. The horn was given an "immersion rebuild" by Larry Naylor about a year ago, since it had lain unplayed for 25 years; it plays very well now. Mitchell Lurie Premium #3 reeds are currently my favorite. I also just bought a Selmer SA80 Series II alto sax in matte finish. A nice alto, but not as nice as I remember the Mark VI I played a few times in high school 30 years ago.

I'm a competent amateur, former high school player who plays etudes when the kids are asleep or out with Mom. I play a 1970 Selmer Series 10, B45 with Vandoren traditional 3.5 or 5RV with traditional 4.0. Sometimes I play Vintage Australian 3.5 with the B45. Rovner or Luyben ligature.
I find that the 5RV is much less forgiving of reeds than the B45. It's much more difficult to find a good reed for the 5RV. I guess the larger opening on the B45 allows you to compensate for reed variations with your embouchure. When reeds soften up with the 5RV they seem to close off quickly.
Anybody else play the Series 10?

I have a master's degree in clarinet performance and am a wanna be university clarinet teacher. I am a competent amateur. I play R-13's (Bd & A) bought in the early 80's.
I have 2 mouthpieces.
1. (Believe it folks) The Buffet mp that came with my R-13 A. It is a great mp. Most unusal. I have taken lessions from Dr. Frank Kolwalsky at FSU and several of his masters or phd students. They all like the mouthpiece. We did send it off to Robert Scott in MI; while he worked on it, he did not sign the mp. so I guess it was essentially unchanged.
2. A b-45 that Robert Scott reworded (& signed) to a medium facing.
# 1 is my favorite mp.
I use a variety of reed---V12 3.5, V12 3, Vandoran Regular 3 or 3.5
For a while a few years ago I used Glotan chamber cut 3's. After a couple of years those reeds changed such that I could not use them.

I hold a BMus in performance. I am currently a grad student in musicology and library science, and I play semi-pro (chamber and orchestral, mostly) and not as often as I would like. I play classical only (at least, I do not play jazz seriously).
I play Buffet R-13s, recently new, selected by myself. Kaspar Cicero 13 mpc, Vandoren V-12s strength 3 1/2 or 4 (all hand-adjusted, otherwise I find the vast majority unplayable), and Bonade ligature.

i have subbed with all the orchestras in NZ except for the best one (damm!), whatever that tells you. Plus i studied for 5 years in the us and played there with lots of groups/orchestras etc. Oh yeah, i won the ICA orchestral audition competition in 1998, for what thats worth (it seemed important at the time).
I play an R13 B flat clarinet, and a Yamaha YCL 85-2 A clarinet that has had some retuning work. I use a Barrel made by Jimmy Yan on both instruments, but have an old trusty Moenig/Buffet in reserve.
Mouthpieces- a Zinner blank that i have refaced to be similar to the Gigliotti 3 or 5RV Lyre13.
Ligature- one of two Bonades (Screws down or above depending what mood i'm in or how good the reed is), sometimes string and sometimes a BG tradition. My Vandoren optimum has now permanantly moved to my alto sax case, but i only really play this when teaching.
Reeds- Vandoren Trad and V12 3.5, plus i've had some success with GC Evolution reeds, i also make my own but at the moment i'm trying lots of stuff out (i like to work out why reeds don't work as well as why they do work).

Hi Mark, re: "What are you getting out of this". Some of my students come from other teachers with setups that I've not worked with personally. This has been most interesting. I've also considered trying other setups, so I thought I'd get some imput. Notable, I'm new to the BB (took me awhile to know the meaning of "BB"), and I didn't think to research other threads. Thanks to all!

For Community Band playing:
Bb Soprano Buffet R-13 circa 1973 w/ Fobes San Francisco CF+ and Barrel 66mm Vandoren V12/4.5
Eb Soprano Buffet RC circa 98 w/ Fobes San Francisco (probably going to try one of his barrels too since i have to pull out all the way to the cork most of the time with the stock buffet barrel) And Vandoren 4 reeds ( I really like the way the Fobes mouthpiece cleared out the fuzziness in the throat tones and gave me much more control with dynamics)
and for marching band
Buffet B-12 circa 2001 with a Vandoren 5RVLyre and 4 vandoren reeds

Admittedly, what I use is somewhat eccentric, but works like a charm!
For instruments, I use a couple of real old clarinets (not completely sure of the brand or the fingering system employed) that I stole from the Deutches Museum in Munich (it wasn't very busy that day and the guard was taking a nap). I did drill a few more holes in the instrument (not to mention adding some scotch tape and rubber bands here and there), since I was only able to figure out about seven or eight of them. However, when there are notes in the music I can't get I simply edit the music. No big deal, eh?
I found my mouthpiece at an arts and crafts show at the local mall. It was originally a garden stepping stone (cement, I think?) that I broke into little pieces and then put a flat edge on one side of one of the pieces with a cement saw and some files. It's really pretty flat (as opposed to its' pitch -- still working on that though). I went ahead and spray painted it with Rust-o-leum so it matched the clarinets.
My ligature is an elastic band that I pulled out of an old girlfriend's panties (she stills wonders why they don't stay up!). She's pretty thin so I only have to double it over a couple times.
Finally, my reeds are all handmade. My mom has this great old bamboo couch on the back porch. When she's not home, I cut a few inches off the legs, split them in pieces and model it after a Good Humor Strawberry Shortcake stick (a little wider, however). By the time I finish with it, I don't really know what number it is, but I'm able to keep them really clean with a little lemon Pledge. Anyway, my Mom doesn't use the couch that much so she just thinks her legs are getting longer. I won't tell if you don't.
Overall, this setup (if you haven't yet guessed) gives me quite a unique sound!
Oh, BTW, I am a professional -- I play in a major symphony orchestra and also a lot of chamber music/solo concerts. I also use the same setup in marching band.

I have about nine mouthpieces on active duty. I fit the reed I have at hand to whichever one of them it works best with (rather than find a reed for a specific mouthpiece). I stay at a 3.0 or 3.5 strength (or 4 cut down). The best overall mouthpiece of the group is either a Greg Smith 1 (an early one, but not a Hawkins-affiliated early one), a Cundy-Bettoney, either of my Bays (one is an "Equalizer"), a Hawkins-adjusted HS**, or a Matsen-adjusted B45. I try to follow the Bonade advice---well, the "medium" part of that advice---I'll never have just one mouthpiece---how could you ever find reeds for it???? My ligature is this incredible thing from Leblanc---forget the name of it---very thin gold cigar-band style. Reeds are Vandoren regular (3.0 or 3.5) or Mitchell Lurie (4.0 or 4.5) or---when I am feeling especially patient and willing to suffer---a few old genuine Spanish Olivieri's (plastic case). --Bill.

Finally, what I believe to be my final setup for many years, is complete. I was waiting for a few last ingredients, but here it is. I only have a Bb clarinet. No A. (although there's always next year)
-Amati 604-II repadded by David Spiegelthal with tan leather pads and adjusted/worked on a little more by Graham Golden (including two resonance holes in the bell which, while looking odd, serve the purpose VERY well)
-Bartolai barrel
-Greg Smith 1* mouthpiece
-Bay clear mouthpeice patch
-Gonzalez FOF 3.75 reeds
-Francois Louis Ultimate ligature (silver)
Finally. And you know what? It was worth the wait!

I'm a pro and play dixieland and jazz and then there's the polka band, and the trio where we attempted to play swing. Nobody knew it but us.
But someone used the word "float" and I like that. I have a 1979 Buffet Crampon and liked the m.p. that came with it. But, I have since gotten an Arbex #5 for jazz, a Borbek, a Vandoren B45, and recently a Pomarico jazz crystal which I'm not used to yet.
I have a noblet C clarinet which is really nice. I just put whatever m.p. I happen to be using on the B flat clarinet on the C when I'm doubling and it works okay.
The alto saxophone is another story for another time. I think the m.p. is worth a whole lot more than the sax but it works good.

have you tried Toasted Almond sticks - the slightly thicker blank in combination with morree style cut produces better articulation than the Strawberry Shortcake. Also, good puns printed on the stick.

Bb clarinet:
For chamber and orchestral work I use an early 1980s David Hite Signature mouthpiece (essentially the same as the current J&D Hite Model D), an original Harrison gold ligature and either Vandoren V-12 #4 or Zonda #4 reeds.
For jazz I use a late 1970s Bill Street 5+J mouthpiece, a Rico Grand Concert Select H Series gold lacquer ligature (copy of Harrison) and Marca #4 reeds.
Bass clarinet:
For all work I use a Ridenour mouthpiece, a Rovner fabric ligature and Legere #2-1/2 plastic tenor saxophone reeds.

Well, thought I'd add, although I'm a little late and at the bottom of the barrel....but what the heck...
R-13 clarinet with Greg Smith 1*, BG lig.(can't remember which one, it's the ultra-almost does your dishes-ligature, the one with metal and cord inside)
and my own reeds, about a 4 1/2....

Brez- you seem to be new. Since I am currently checking out schools of music (in hopes I will get accepted to one or two) I want to ask you a question since you seem to be a college student yourself- either that or a member of faculty. Can you email or IM me?

Well this is old, but ok...
I play an RC Prestige, my most often used mps are Vandorens, B45, 5RV, M13, though I intend to pick up a Greg Smith when I get some cash. I use a rovner ligature. Vandoren reeds (usually not V12; not worth the few bucks extra usually since I'm a starving student), and the # depends on the mouthpiece and what I'm playing; might be anything from 2.5 to 4.5. I'm a university student who plays occasionally with ensembles, usually those associated with said University. I play mostly, but by no means exclusively, Jazz. Hope I haven't forgotten anything.

What do you mean by "matched"? It has meant different things to different people.

These clarinets were ordered from Selmer in 93 as part of a set. They are identical serial numbers A and B meaning A and Bb made as set to be sold together ...chosen for me with advce of Guy Dangain...I was mistaken on which one was which....

Identical serial numbers?? That's going to cause some confusion ...
That still begs the question - what makes them matched besides having identical serial numbers? It sounds more like a marketing thing than some physical actuality.

I'm a composition student at uni, and a fairly advanced amateur clarinettist who hopes one day to be a very good professional.
I use
Yamaha 34 clarinet
Fobes Debut mouthpiece
Some old ligature that I had lying around. (occasionally I use a shoelace)
Rico Evolution size 3 1/2 reeds.
I am 99% happy with my sound. Most of the problems are caused by flaws in my own playing and are NOT the fault of my equipment.

I am an advanced amateur.
Clarinet: Yamaha YCL-SEV
Mouthpiece: Richard Hawkins B
Ligature: Vandoren Optimum
Reeds: V12 3 1/2 and Vandoren Blue 3 1/2
I just switched from an R-13 to a Yamaha SEV, which provides me better intonation and a tone which is closer to what I like. The projection of the Yamaha clarinet is excellent and useful with our wind ensemble, that includes a large numbers of saxophones and trumpets.

I am a beginning/intermediate player depending on who is listening.
These clarinets are all Bb.
P-series selmer with a Morgan J-6 mouthpiece and #2 Marca reeds. Wild!
1954 Leblanc Symphonie with a Clark Fobes 4L mouthpiece and Gonzalez
2 1/2 reeds. Sometimes I alse use the Mozart reeds. Easy to play and the intonation is right on. Very smooth.
These both got rebuilt by John Butler and play beautifully. Great work John!
1940 Buffet with a Gregory Smith Kasper Cicero also with 21/2 gonzalez reeds which is now being rebuilt by David Spiegelthal because I wanted to try leather pads for a change and it is also a nice way to meet new people.
This clarinet is a great all around player. The only reason I didn't try a Buffet earlier is because I try to avoid cults, but it is still not an R-13.
I use a Bay ligature with all three. A small with the Smith and Morgan and a medium with the Fobes.
Thats about it. I have been reading this thread of and on for awhile but tried my best to avoid entry. That cult thing again.
Peace to all!
Kurt

I use a Kaspar 13 Chicago, Kaspar 13, 14, Cicero on my B flat, A clarinets, a Frank L. Kaspar Ann Arbor on my eflat soprano and a Frank Kaspar Cicero 13 bass clarinet mouthpiece on my Selmer Paris bass clarinets----I also use Frank L. Kaspar, and Harrison ligatures on these instruments. A good settup helps, but using it daily is better.

kia ora
my setup has changed since i posted in 2001
so has Michaels- i believe he now uses a Lomax mouthpiece
Buffet R13 Eflat with Brad Behn/Zinner A frame mouthpiece
Buffet R13 Bflat with Viotto GO and Moennig barrel
Yamaha YCL 85-2 with Buffet barrel
for ligatures i use Yamaha silver, inverted with bumps to simulate "bonade inverted with centre bit cut out" when i'm playing solo
string on the E flat
and the "Jurasic ligature"- my old Rovner from the 1980s with the Vandoren Optimum "parralel rails toneplate" for all chamber/orchestra etc playing
i'm a Proffesional player who teaches a lot, or a Teacher who plays a lot depending on which month of the year it is. I spend the next 2.5months touring with an opera (and surfing lots during the days!) YAY
have fun

I'm an advanced player, going into my senior year of high school with the intent of becoming a music ed major in college. I'm second chair in the highest classical band at the moment.
I have a wooden Selmer Signet 100 that plays very well for me, with a hairline crack in the back extending from the top of the upper joint down to the thumb key. It does not affect the sound and was there when I bought it (eBay). I use a Vandoren 5RV mouthpiece, Rovner Dark ligature (inverted), and size 3.5 Mitchell Lurie reeds. I mostly play this setup in the Wind Ensemble, but have doubled on it for jazz before and it works fine for me. I march with a school-owned Vito bass clarinet (range to low Eb) that I bought a new mouthpiece and ligature for -- Vandoren B45 and Rovner Light ligature. I use Rico size 3 tenor sax reeds because a) I've never met a bass clarinet reed I've liked, and b) I was already playing tenor sax when I started bass clarinet, and the reeds fit, and I'm cheap.
Also, this is my first post, though I've been reading for a while before I finally signed up. You all have a great community here.

Play semi-professionally, teach privately, and some large ensemble teaching. Two setups:
Kaspar Ann Arbor, Luyben Ligature, V12 4's
Portnoy BP02, same ligature, Vandoren Traditional 4's.
I use both on a R-13 Bb and the Portnoy setup on a Selmer A.

I use the same setup whatever I'm playing. Orchestra, Concert Band or chamber. Amateur, and would recognize a clarinet if I fell over one. Probably.
1978 and 1984 Boosey & Hawkes 926 Imperials , BG Super Revelation ligatures. Used to use and love Olegatures until the pile of broken screws started blotting out the sun. Blue box or V12 Vandoren reeds. RM 10 mouthpieces by The Great Ralph Morgan.
Otto Link 5star and 7star Rubber mps on Dolnet M70 Tenor and an identically styled Bel-Air Alto. 6star metal Link Super Tonemaster on the tenor as well, but I don't like it much. Kicking myself for not knowing about Excaliburs at the time. Ligatures are the plain metal ones that came in the boxes.

This coming school year, I will be a high school senior. I am fairly advanced, with flaws however.
Buffet R-13 - Bb
Vandoren 5RV Lyre Series 13 Mouthpiece
Vandoren Trad./V-12 Reeds - Size 3.5-4
Sometimes I use Brancher Opera or Jazz Reeds - Same size
Luyben Ligature, although I find it seems too lose to me and you're never sure if it's holding the reed secure enough. I'll buy a new one soon...probably a Rovner or Bonade. I like the backwards ones. I own a Vandoren Optimum, but am not thrilled with it anymore.

Just curious about the Mark VII's.
How do you like them? Have you tried other Selmer's, and if so, what was the difference?
I am thinking of getting a used Mk VII alto in gold lacquer. I have a Mk VI silver plated and love that horn. But always wanted a gold lacquer one.. A Mk VII is easier on the wallet, I think.
Thanks for your thoughts.

Sorry for mixing apples and oranges !
My message above was directed to Mark Pinner about his May 28, 2004 posting on this thread. Sorry Mark, I clicked on the wrong reply button.
Anyhow,
My setups are as follows:
Clarinets:
Bb: Buffet F Series, Selmer 10 S, Selmer 9, J.Gras (old one!) all of them with the extra ring on the left hand 3rd finger. (forked Ab/Bb)
A: Leblanc LL 1177 also with the 3rd finger ring. (Yeah, I suffer from OCD)
Mouthpieces:
Clarinet:
Vandoren B45, B46, B45 dot. many Selmers, (HS*, **'s, C85/115, ) I switch them around here and there but lately I am sticking to a B45 and a Selmer HS** that came from the factory a bit open than usual. Sounds great for big band work.
Reeds: any brand I can get my hands on. I adjust all the reeds to make them work, so they all work for me
However, the ones that stand out are Gonzalez, Rico regulars, Grand Concert, Queen, some Vandoren regular, and Macafferri, all between 2.5 and 3 strenght. I also have some old Roy Maier that work great, as well as Mitchell Lurie.
Alto Sax: Berg Larsen rubber 85/2/SMS, Meyer 6 with short and medium facings, with LaVoz, Queen, Vandoren, Zonda, Rico regular, all in 2.5 to 3 strenght.
Tenor Sax: Link 7* NY Metal, with Rico, Queen, Vandoren V16, La Voz, also 2.5 or 3 strenght.
Hope this helps.

I'm an advanced student, studying toward teaching clarinet and sax, I currently teach recorder and theory.
My clarinet is currently a Hanson HE-3V since my Yammy CS-V was stolen and I use a Vandoren B45 with a Rovner Dark lig and Zonda 3 reeds, I also used to frequently use a Pomarico Ruby and Pillinger mp but these too were stolen.

Nickel Buffet R-13 A and B-flat with Moennig barrels
Nickel Buffet E-flat, with Chadash barrel, and relocated register key (about a quarter inch higher)
Selmer low C bass (70's era, I don't know the model name)
Buffet low C bass - the latest model
Can't really decide between the two basses - the Buffet is even, with excellent intonation but lacks any kick in the sound. The Selmer requires a bit of wrangling to play (you really have to adjust a lot in different registers), but I love its sound - to me that is "classic" bass clarinet tone.
Mouthpieces, reeds, ligatures:
e-flat - Vandoren B44 , Buffet stock ligatore (love it!!),Vandoren #4 reeds
B-flat / A - Vandoren B45 Lyre and B-45 dot, BG Revelation, V-12 3.5 reeds
Basset Horn (large bore) - Hite Basset Mouthpiece/ligature, Vandoren 3.5
Bass - Vandoren B-40, BG Revelation, Vandoren 3.5 reeds

1. Gonzalez #4 reeds (or #3.75, or #3, or anything on my desk).
2. Vytas Krass "Everett Matsen" facing mpc. put on a D. Bonade "Q.S." blank (or anything else that matches the reed I am holding in my hand - but the Krass is the best)
3. Harrison lig (no variation)
4. Any of the following clarinets: 1931 Selmer, 1936 Buffet, 1938 Buffet, 1949 Selmer, 1955 Leblanc, 1958 (?) Marigaux, 1967 Buffet (A and Bb), or 1980 B&H 1010.
I have encountered only a small handful of clarinet equipment whose intrinsic worth I was not able to discover. Two clarinets - a B&H 2-20 and a Penzel-Mueller "Brilliante" - and a Clark Fobes mouthpiece. And, perhaps, with more time, I would have come to love them too.
Bill.

When I played 30+ yrs ago, it was my R13 Bb / A , both set up by my teacher, leon Russianoff. The mp was on a Chedville blank Charlie Bay made for me in 1966 at an Ithaca workshop. Oh, what a mp !
I've since given that mp away to an old friend since I'd stopped playing for yrs..
Now, i just noodle around on my clarinets. I have 5 R13 Bb's, 2 A's and an eefer and an ESMM. A Leblanc C clarinet, Yamaha 681 eefer and a 1959 Selmer eefer. I use a Fobes CF+ mp and a Rosewood bbl Clark made for me.
These use a Spriggs lig or rarely, then a BG Rev.
Reeds are V12 #3
The yamie eefer uses a Bay mp, MOM, and the Selmer uses a Fobes San Fran model. Both having a BG Rev lig. Stock bbl's. I have a Lelandais eefer mp, obtained from Harold Freeman. I've never used it and it's mint condition.
Reeds are 35 year old Vandoren #3.5
I've a set of Yamaha silverplated Bb/A that are virtually unplayed on and belonged to my late friend, John Denman.
Alto sax's; My Selmer 80 , Martin Music Man and Yamaha 875 Altos use a Fobes mp Clark made for me. Vandy #3 reeds
My Sopsax, a Yamaha 875, uses a Stock Yamaha 4C plastic mp (luv it) and sometimes a #4 Yanagisawa.
My flute: rarely played yamaha 481H , no reeds, mp provided by nature.......

This thread is soooo long. Is anyone going to bother to read all this?
Anyway, my setup is a Buffet R-13 with a Grenadilla Wood Greg Smith Kaspar mouthpiece and a BG Super Revelation ligature and Vandoren V12 reeds--either a 2 1/2 or a 3. No, I'm not a beginner--I've been playing for almost 45 years now.
I use a Forte clarinet for outdoor stuff and use the Greg Smith mouthpiece setup for it as well.

As Mark and others have suggested, please do a search of other "set-up" threads.
I have been a professional clarinetist for 40+ years, having played in lots of venues. If you're interested, check GOOGLE (images) under "john moses," I'm not the kid with the chop sticks in his nose, scroll down, I'm the picture with the Little Orchestra Society link. A GOOGLE search for "john j. moses" will bring up some more stuff I've done. Most of which I don't remember, some of it seems correct. IBDB.com has a few of the Broadway shows I've premiered, I think about 26 at last count. IMDB.com lists a few movies I've played on, but misses listing me on about 100 more that I've done. This is probably more research than you'd like to do, so here's my current set-up:
CLARINET SETUP:
HITE mouthpiece - JJM facing (fairly long and close)
Vandoren #5 reeds (vintage 1970-80's)
New FL ligature (Francois Louie-prototype)
Jimmy Yan 66mm “Pear” barrel (JJM bore ala Moennig)
Buffet R-13(nickel keys, upper joint all cork pads, Loree thumb rest) 400,***
*note: Jimmy Yan has done all the custom work on my horn for years
BAM (French-made single case)
Yamaha (computer-style double case)
Blayman pegs & stands (from Herb Blayman himself!)
*note: Randy's new "Blayman" stands are great, just like the originals
Lip-guard dental appliance by Dr. Harris Levine in Ft Lee, NJ
*note: many long hours of playing each day, 7 days a week, require it!

My current setup:
Bb - Buffet Festival, Backun bell, Opperman barrel, Opperman mpc for both Bb and A
A - Buffet RC Prestige, Backun bell, Opperman barrel
C - Buffet E11 (it's a great horn for the price!), uses Bb mpc.
Eb - Patricola Grenadilla, Opperman barrel, Chedeville refaced by Opperman
Bass - Selmer 37 to low C, very old Selmer refaced by Lee Livengood to Matson specs.
Backup Bb - Malerne that I got for $150! Made in the 30s or 40s I believe. It seals though and I can practice on it! A backup instrument for that price, can't beat it!!
Alto Sax - 1928 Conn with all the extra trill keys, Selmer C* and Meyer 5 mpcs.
All of my instrument work is done by Michael Hammer in Philadelphia and I've had tuning and voicing work done by both Kal Opperman and Morrie Backun.
I'm a professional player and primarily play contemporary music. Working with living composers is a real thrill for me and it seems to pay the bills, for which I'm grateful. I freelance quite a bit as well, playing travelling b'way shows, lots of pickup chamber music and the occassional orchestra gig.
I don't know why equipment is so interesting to people, because in the end you're the one who's gotta be happy with what you sound like, but for what it's worth, there's what I play.

R-13s from the mid-70s, set up by Kalmen Opperman.
Opperman mouthpiece and barrel.
Opperman ligature (a light metal Meyer, bent into shape so it doesn't contact the edges of the reed); screws on bottom.
Whatever reeds seem to be working well -- well tinkered with.

B-flat: a Noblet grenadilla wood clarinet of unknown age and model, with its original mouthpiece, Vandoren reeds, size 4.
Backup B-flat: a plastic Leblanc clarinet, early to mid-60s, same reeds.
E-flat: a Selmer with a J & D Hite mouthpiece, Vandoren reeds size 3.
I'm only in high school, but I'm considered to be "excellent" at the clarinet by my trombone-playing band director, and compared to the kids I go to school with. Hope my information helps.

Naturally. Clarinetists flock to a "setup" thread like gnats to a porch light.

Buffet R-13 somewhere in the 400000 serial #'s (???---got it 4 or 5 years ago). I have cork pads in most of the upper joint, silencers here and there, a hasty pad for the register key, the bottom two side trill keys go down the same height, and I use a Moennig 66mm barrel. Played with Vandoren M15 mouthpiece and Vandoren V12 or 56 Rue Lepic #4 reeds and an oldER Rovner Eddie Daniels II lig (the older material, not the new stuff that looks like it would melt in the sun) or occasionally a silver inverted Bonade or Bois (the o-ring-looking-thing) lig. I don't care much for the Bois anymore, though. At first it opened up the tone, but it felt very unstable and sounded a little shrill to me after a while.

Clarinet Student- High School
Starting with my Bb Soprano
Buffet Vintage R13 selected with the aid of Walter Grabner. Beautiful sound and consistent in all registers. My ligature is a Rovner Light which I really prefer over the Vandoren Optimum since the band I perform tends to play moderately light pieces, though I will switch to the optimum for marches and such. The mouthpiece is a Chicago Mouthpiece also from Walter Grabner that I purchased while at Clarinet Cornucopia at Northern Illinois. We both skipped a masterclass so I could try out the mouthpieces. My reed of choice is a Vandoren 4 as I find the 3.5 to be just a little to light for my mouth.
My bass clarinet is a Buffet Prestige 1193 with silver keys. I really love it, and it will be my horn of choice probably for the rest of my life. My mouthpiece is a "World Class" again of Walter Grabners though I also use a custom faced Selmer C* created by Rick Sayre. My ligature is for the bass switches as well between an Eddie Daniel Rovner and a Vandoren Optimum based on the music. The reed of choice for me is again a Vandoren 4, though sometimes I will also use a light 4.5.

Ok, I'll bite - but only as my stuff seems to be in an unconscionable minority:
Reed: Grand Concert Select Evolution 3
Lig.: Rovner Light
Mpc.: Vandoren B45 dot (5RV a very close second)
Cl.: Selmer Paris Prologue II
I find this a good all-round arrangement. The reeds and mouthpiece are recent changes.

Tell you what, it sure reveals the number of different approaches to equipment out there. Some people have loads of stuff. Some people recognise important Names in the field. Some play vintage equipment. Some play stock equipment, some have everything hand-adjusted. I guess there's no 'best' answer. And to think that, growing up, I thought everyone played Buffet / Vandoren straight out of the box.

hmm... I guess I'll add my $10 worth. I play on a plastic Selmer CL300 with a Vandoren B45 mouthpiece. I use Vandoren V.12 3.5 reeds. I have a Rovner "Dark" ligature. I'm only a high school student and I'm trying to work my way up to a Buffet R13.

I play a Bb Buffet Tosca greenline with a Chadash barrel, Fobes CF+ MP, a eddie daniels ligature, and Gonzalez 3.25 FOF Reeds. I love this set-up. There is a huge difference if I switch to the barrel that came with the tosca, it has a stuffy resistance. The chadash barrel really makes my clarinet fun to play.
