Has anyone been in a performance of Thieve's carnival as "The Musician"? I was cast in this role, and need a lot of help thinking of what to play. Any advice would be very welcome, the extent of guidance I have at this point is "If it's wrong, I'll be sure to tell you." Thanks!
So many instruments to play........so little time to play them!

Yes, I played that part when I was in high school (that was 36 years ago). I played a bit from Romeo and Juliet before the entrance at the 2nd act (don't remember exactly which part from R & J), and did a lot of improvising as the director asked. He wanted a specific length and worked with me as to what he wanted it to sound like--happy, fast, lilting, sad, slow, beautiful--those kind of things. He wanted mostly things that were original. No one had told me back then that improvising was difficult, so I didn't have a problem with it. But, he liked it so much he cast me as the lead role in the UIL contest play the next month--so I had an actual speaking part.
And, I remember being on center stage at the beginning and "awaking" with a bit from the William Tell Overture.
I believe the part was originally written to be played by a flute-type instrument--but I used my Bb clarinet.
The worst part was the white face make-up and those black tights. Thank God I still had a good figure back then.

Darius Milhaud composed some music for the solo clarinet in
this play. I haven't seen a complete edition, but there is an
arrangement of three portions with piano accompaniment
added published under the title "Petit Concert".
I know of two other plays with roles for a clarinet player.
Edward Albee's "The Sandbox" one-act play and a longer
play (I forget the author) called "The Lady and the Clarinet".
Clarinet parts are available from the theatrical publisher.

Ah, this brings back memories. My drama class in high school did "The Sandbox" as well as "Thieve's Carnival." Didn't do "TheLady and the Clarinet," however.
Nice to know there is music available, James. That would have been helpful 36 years ago.
If you decide to use the "Petit Concert" by Darius Milhaund, you need to talk to the director and be sure he wants to include a keyboard--or piano. The keyboard player could be hidden off stage and not an actual character, as the Musician is a specific character in the play.
