"I have just been informed that Herb Blayman passed away within
the last 24 hours. I don't have all the details yet, but it
seems he fell last week and broke his hip. After that the
deterioration was rapid.

Very sad to hear this news. Herbie was a very polite, kind and generous person. I knew him when he finished at Juilliard. One of Arthur Christmann's many fine pupils, he was very respected by all of us who knew him. I heard him play the Mozart at Town Hall around that time (late 1940's) and that performance was very well received. As Principal Clarinet with the Met Orchestra, he gained a fine reputation through many years of service in that organization. He came for a brief visit my NMC/Interlochen studio in the summer of 1971 and we had a very welcome reunion. That was the last time i saw Herbie. He will be missed.

Herb will be missed by all here in NYC, and throughout the world.
He touched so many lives. I studied with him, briefly, in the early 1960s. Then we worked together at The Met, I was a sub for him, which was a great honor. We worked on his wonderful stands together (I told him they were too heavy). He told me to "get lost, kid!", "You'll be glad it's so heavy when some clown walks into it and your horns don't fall over!"
Herb was right! I still use his stands, as do many players around the world.
His performances at The Met are legendary, and I'll never forget his most beautiful TOSCA solo...I miss you Herbie, thanks for the memories.

It's quite difficult for older people to recover from broken hips. A very painful and severe injury.

I had the great fortune of studying for a summer with Herbert Blayman..he was a stupendous teacher. Gracious and generous and very insightful always...the clarinet world has lost a great artist.

JJM, others, I've been asked now my multiple people including some former students of Herb's if there is going to be any kind of remembrance for him in the NYC area. Has anyone heard anything? If not, should we consider organizing something so folks can get together and reflect on his life and career?

Thanks Mark, and others, for all the kind words said about our friend and colleague, Herb Blayman.
As soon as we receive word from Herb's family, or close friends in NC, we'll try to organize a memorial concert or event for Herb. Lets keep in touch with all of those on the BBoard who are interested in this, and are from the NYC area.
I'm sure other groups will form elsewhere, when we have more information.

The Blayman family is planning a memorial service for both Herb and his wife, Peg, to take place in New Jersey sometime in March or early April. I am in touch with his daughter, Rosemary, and will post the information as soon as the arrangements are completed.
