 Mouthpiece for Yamaha 72A
Author: JamesE

I have just acquired a Yamaha A clarinet, model 72A in pretty good condition. I was able to find a couple of old mouthpieces in my stash (one from when I started playing eons ago) that blow pretty freely and in tune. But they are both old and a little beat up.

I am looking for mouthpiece suggestions as I have never owned a Yamaha instrument before. Any recommendations would be most helpful.

Here is also an interesting observation, should anyone want to take a stab at an explanation. The barrel, first joint and bell all have “Yamaha” clearly stamped on them. The lower joint has a serial number, but nothing to indicate that it is Yamaha, and it is clearly a different wood ( it is much smoother and lighter in color than the other pieces). Also, there is no serial number on the upper joint. I am wondering if this might be a hybrid of some sort. It certainly plays well.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Jim

all three of the top line Yamaha clarinets i've owned have had the serial number on both the top and bottom joints, so it does seem odd that this one doesn't. The 72A has the reputation for being a darn good instrument. I have owned a "Custom YCL 85", which i regret selling for the paltry sum of $1000us, and a "Custom YCL 85-2" which has darn good intonation but doesn't sound as good as my Buffet.
is there any reason that you can't use the same mouthpiece as you do on your B flat clarinet? or is this A clarinet your only clarinet?

Of the 4 Yamahas I own only my bass has the serial number on both the upper and lower joints.

I've no experience with the YCL 72A so can't give much advice about mouthpieces. However, I have had problems of sharpness especially with throat notes which is worse when using Vandoren mouthpieces but nothing that can't be coped with.
