Hi everyone! I have some extra money to throw around from Christmas, and I've been thinking lately that I really want to start working on my reeds. I know everyone has a different method, and I was thinking what the best starter would be for this sort of thing. I have absolutely no experience in this field, and I am a minor so I have limits in finances and transportation (which rules out classes, I suppose).
Now, I've heard of a few different things, which I've asked my private teacher about. I know lots of people swear by Tom Rinedour's ATG system. When I asked my teacher about it, he said that he doesn't use it because he doesn't like working with reeds facing down, so he can't exactly see what he's doing. I also asked him about the vandoren reed resurfacer and he said it was somewhat similar to just using reed rush and something or other, although it might be worth having. The book he recommended was the "Reed Mate Single Reed Guide".
Now, I realize that everything differs with opinion, but I'm confused of which path to take. Larry Guy's reed book (which I own, but don't understand) goes into all sorts of things, with a pretty complicated breakin period and lots of tools. My teacher says that I can get by fine with some reed rush, some glass, some paper bag for polishing, and a box cutter or exacto knife. I know a lot of people on this BB use ATG or the Vandoren Resurfacer. What is recommended as a primer?

Get the Ridenour ATG system- it comes with both a 44 (i think) page guide and a DVD which shows exactly how to test and finish a reed, plus the tools required to do the job. At around $50 or so it's a little pricey, but well worth it when you can make almost any reed play very well. But, more importantly, you will understand exactly what you are doing and why-- no magic, just good info!

Not to undercut the advertisers on this BBoard (who help pay the bills so we can all have fun - indeed I'm gonna mention one in a moment) I found a lot of (I guess - I am a strict beginner) good information on the Cherryvalleymusic.com web page.
Or try springing for some $18.00 per reed (!) from the Legere synthetics folks - they advertize here. I'm sort of in the process of finding the right strengths (for me) from them. No "adjustments" needed, I guess. (Or not very easy and definietly NOT recommended by the maker.)
