Hi everyone! I have some extra money to throw around from Christmas, and I've been thinking lately that I really want to start working on my reeds. I know everyone has a different method, and I was thinking what the best starter would be for this sort of thing. I have absolutely no experience in this field, and I am a minor so I have limits in finances and transportation (which rules out classes, I suppose).
Now, I've heard of a few different things, which I've asked my private teacher about. I know lots of people swear by Tom Rinedour's ATG system. When I asked my teacher about it, he said that he doesn't use it because he doesn't like working with reeds facing down, so he can't exactly see what he's doing. I also asked him about the vandoren reed resurfacer and he said it was somewhat similar to just using reed rush and something or other, although it might be worth having. The book he recommended was the "Reed Mate Single Reed Guide".
Now, I realize that everything differs with opinion, but I'm confused of which path to take. Larry Guy's reed book (which I own, but don't understand) goes into all sorts of things, with a pretty complicated breakin period and lots of tools. My teacher says that I can get by fine with some reed rush, some glass, some paper bag for polishing, and a box cutter or exacto knife. I know a lot of people on this BB use ATG or the Vandoren Resurfacer. What is recommended as a primer?
