 flat bed scanner for PrintMusic
Author: Lynn

Hi guys....
I hope everyone is having a nice holiday.

I'm soliciting advice on scannesr for use in scanning music into a Finale product (PrintMusic). As the PrintMusic user manual advises, HP scanning software presentsl numerous problems and a rather lengthy work-around, hence my search for a "better" brand of scanner for music purposes. Anyone on the BB have first-hand experience with Print Music and the scanning process?
Thanks in advance
Lynn

i use a HP scanjet 6300C, and it leaves something to be desired. lots of scan errors. not sure if its the scanner, or the scan recognition software in printmusic. simple stuff, it scans pretty well. say a solo line with no embellishments, nothing shorter than a 16th.

introduce a piano part, trills, grace notes, 32nds, etc, and the scan is a mess.

I agree that the HP scanning software is crap. I have an HP scanner but use ReadIris Pro software instead of the HP. HP's camera software has a lot of capatibility issues with XP also. It's easier for me to download my pictures off of the USB port instead of using the HP software.

My old Canoscan 670 has worked well for small-format music. I have a large format scanner (16x20) for quarto-sized music that has a parallel interface (and is slow) but still works.

With all the proofing that needs to be done given current scanning technology, I personally find it much more efficient to enter the music by hand. Shortcut keys are a bit hard to find and get the hang of in Finale, but it's very quick once you've had a good bit of practice.

Hi,

I'm not sure whether you want hardware advice or software advice but I can speak about hardware. I don't use the music software but my Canoscan 3000F is an amazing little scanner for something that I got new for about $70. This scanner even copies color slides and negatives as well. The software that comes with it is adequate.

I had the little brother, the 670U like Mark, and it was great and needed no more power than the USB. Check out the Canon line of small scanners; you do not have to spend a lot of money to get a good product. The footprint is also small.

Perhaps what you have is really a software problem.

Thanks to everyone for their input, particularly regarding the Canon products. Although I'm a novice user of PrintMusic I'm enthusiastic about its capabilities, and the scanning features make it even more attractive. I look forward to trying something other than the HP ScanJet 5300. I've gotten it to work correctly on about fifty pages, but as Paul Dods posted, the more complex scans sometime produce numerous errors.

I'll be attending the Texas Music Educators Association convention in February, so I'm hopeful of finding a SmartMusic rep on the convention floor who may be able to address the scanning issues. Anyone on this forum planning to play in the Texas All-State Band/Orchestra/Choir Alumni concert? I received my music this week, and they report over five hundred alums are registered to play in the Saturday, February 12 event.

Happy New Year!

Lynn
