 Another BG question
Author: kenabbott

Thanks to all who helped me secure the solo transcription for "Let's Dance."

Now a question: How did he pop out those high F's and G's so smoothly? I'm a very experienced player, but for the life of me I can't get them out with the clarity that he does. (Maybe that's why he was great and I'm on the low end of mediocre...)

I find that the normal fingering actually works pretty well, but you definitely have to keep your air pressure up in order to make it sound effortless.

On the arpeggio pops from the thumb high C, I always like the alternate high F with 123/123 plus the left pinkie G# key. Works like a charm every time.

Ken -

In addition to Allen's good advice, Avrahm Galper had a great "pop" fingering for altissimo G -- finger clarion high B and open the two top trill keys.

BG was indeed a major league player. Few people can equal what he dod with ease, particularly in his younger years.

One way to improve your high register playing is to voice the proper register before you play. See Charles Neidich's method, midway through http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=101441&t=101441 and the handkerchief-up-the-bell exercise at http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=149793&t=149757.
