 clarinet duet?
Author: musicmargarita

Hi! I'm looking for a clarinet duet for my friend and me. We're both seniors in high school, both fairly advanced. I'd like something pretty substantial, but not TOO crazy. Grade 4 or 5? The other thing is, we tend to be fairly...combative. We tend to bicker. So if anyone has any suggestions for a clarinet duet, pretty advanced, and somewhat battlesome, that would be greatly appreciated!

Or really, any clarinet duet suggestions at all. Thanks so much!

I don't have access to the list of composers, but British clarinetists Thea King and Georgina Dobree did at least a couple duets on their CD "The Clarinet in Concert Volume II." Mostly Germanic and Romantic music, as I remember.

Playing duets is alot more fun with a friend who you can compete with. Always forcing each other to be just that little bit better.

This isn't really a clarinet thing but, one of my favorite songs that lend itself to a going back and forth type playing is "Lily's Eyes" from The Secret Garden. I've done it vocally and on clarinet, more fun vocally but it wasn't bad to do on clarinet.... could be a good experience if you want to arrange it to fit your criteria better.

Here´s one for You:

Hölzky, Ariadna: Wellenstudie.
Rothman, Daniel: Two Figures in Violet Light.

Those will set You both apart from all those tonal cowards. You a fine inner ear, and be determined to sweat profusely, bicker time included. Beautiful pieces, really.

i have the rubank book of duets (advanced). That's some pretty fun stuff. Plus, for some of the duets, the melody trades off from line to line so you both get to play the melody no matter what. You might want to give that a shot (probably available from Van Cott, a BBoard sponsor)

Try the Mozart. The theme and variations is especially nice.

A follow-up to my earlier post: Franz Krommer (Czech) and Etienne Solere (French). Maybe too much work for now, but fun down the road? Best of luck.

The Poulenc Duet has plenty to keep even really good players busy. It's simultaneously competitive and witty.

I think the Lazarus duets GBK mentions are the three quite athletic duets in the middle of Part 3. They're decent music, with completely equal parts. There are also three "Operatic" duets near the end of Part 3, which are much better music, to play once you have gotten tired of scampering around like a couple of excited squirrels.

Try to find the duet "Cockfight" - I forget the composer - perfect for players who enjoy bickering.

composer is Ernest Bacon
