 Clarinet Day 2005 - Mannes
Author: Kevin
Date:   2004-12-23 21:48

Mannes will be holding "Clarinet Day" on Sunday, January 23rd.

Krakauer, Nuccio, and Neidich will all be performing and giving masterclasses.

I'm a Mannes Preparatory division student and won't miss it for the world.

Is anyone else planning on going?

Ken Shaw wrote a great report on Clarinet Day 2003:

Kevin -

It's not on the Mannes calendar yet. http://www.mannes.edu/college/concerts_events_news/calendar/index.jsp?month=0&year=2005.

What gives?

Ken, It would be great if you could give us a report here in the BBoard when you go there on January.

Clarinet Day, originally scheduled for tomorrow, has been cancelled due to a tremendous snowstorm that is currently hitting New York City. No news on when/if a new date will be announced.

Bummer : (

Why was this thread not taken down? Why was the link not deleted?

Because once in a while I'm human.

Don't be an ass.

Mannes has not rescheduled Clarinet Day as far as I know. Perhaps Kevin can find out.

A good replacement is Selmer Day on April 3 http://test.woodwind.org/Calendar/index.html/2005/4/. I'll definitely be there.

mystery -

Please introduce yourself, tell is about your experience, and explain why you think that a series of master classes and concerts by Ricardo Morales, the clarinet section of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra , David Krakauer and Todd Levy isn't worth going to.

Ask Charette.

There are lots of things worth going to around NYC. It's just against the rules to talk about SOME of them until after they happen.

Of course, those rules only apply to some events.

Which ones?

Let's stay tuned and find out.

Ken:

The Selmer Day invitation says to bring your mouthpiece; there will be lots of instruments to try.

That's good.

But what if I want to try some Selmer mouthpieces? Shouldn't I also bring my instrument?

Or do they not intend to have mouthpieces to try?

larryb -

I don't think it's an evil plot. I wouldn't evaluate an instrument without using my own mouthpiece. I think an invitation to "bring your mouthpiece and try our instruments" is not a prohibition on bringing your own instrument. How would you compare the two otherwise? I also assume they will have Selmer mouthpieces there.

They're in the business of selling clarinets and mouthpieces, and making people think well of Selmer. I don't think they would interfere with this by imposing restrictions.

I could be wrong. We'll all find out on April 4.

they had a "Selmer Day" in NYC a few years ago at the Marriott Marquis on Times Square--a suite full of clarinets including the (then) new Tosca, plus a low-c Model 37, and on the lower mezzanine the then-also-new Reference 54 and 36 (is that right??) tenors. I brought my tenor mouthpiece and my clarinet mouthpiece and had limited fun--problem being the acoustics in the room and the oddity of trying horns with your coat on! As I was leaving the saxophone zone, Frank Wess passed me his way to try some horns, so I "remembered something I forgot" and followed him back to enjoy a master class. Didn't see any mouthpieces; didn't ask about them. Given the mechanics of sanitizing mouthpieces and the relatively low unit cost if they sold any (assuming they'd be set up to sell mouthpieces at all, which I can't imagine Selmer doing, because it would undercut local retailers, and they have a policy of not doing that), I really wouldn't expect mouthpieces to be there. Could be wrong, though!

When Clarinet Day was first cancelled, I received notification via email from the Mannes Director of Admissions, Allison Scola. I was told that details regarding a rain date will be decided "next week" (this was 1/22), and that I'll be contacted.

I still don't know anything more about a possible makeup date than I did on January 22.

The Selmer Day at Steinway Hall looks to me like an interesting event.
