Hi
A sales rep said to me that there were two types of R13's, pitched at 440 and 442 respectively. Is this true and is there some marking on the clarinet to denote a higher or lower pitched clarinet?

Hey Alex, I see you're back in Perth I think with the RC's and Prestiges they have an extra letter (possibly an F) with the serial number and recently they have been ingraving the pitch into the bell. My bells say PRT B 440 and PRT A 440. Not sure about R13's. Either way though, I'm fairly sure that only 440 models are shipped to Australia. The 442's are sent through europe and asia.

Yes, if you purchase an American R-13 (one sold in the US for US use), you'll probably have a 440. If you buy a European R-13 (one made for the Euro market), you'll probably have a 442. If you can try one out before purchasing you can determine the intonation through the use of a simple tuner. Either pitch will work with the help of proper tuning barrels.

Buffet's website, and a brochure that I have at home, says that all R13, including Prestige and Vintage, are A=440. The RC is available in 440, 442, 444.
I thought maybe that was just the English-language website. But if you look up the R13 in French, you still get the English-language description.

If there are so many people on this board unwilling or unable to have a civil and balanced discussion about important issues, then I shan't bother to post here any more.
To the great relief of many of you, no doubt.

Look at the length of the barrel. An instrument classified as a 442 R-13 Bb is in all likelihood a "standard" R-13 made for the world market with a 65 or 64mm barrel.

kia ora
all my experience suggests that they build different clarinets to different pitches (this would also have the best results)
however it has been reported that the clarinets are all the same, just with different barrel lengths (i believe, though it is only 2nd hand information, that this is what the Buffet reps say)
does anyone actually know the answer to this?
it may be that previously they did extra re-tuning work, but that more reccently they just swap the barrel.
i've played R13s that were with an F serial number, from the mid 1970s, and playing these at A=440 would be very difficult, even with a 68mm barrel (which would cause difficulty with short tube notes etc)
