Hi all,
I did post this on the Ethnic BB, but only got one response. I also did search on this BB and found lots of info on Jazz improvision, but can anyone suggest anything for this style of music?
"I have been an amateur clarinet player for many years however have never played in a band simply because I have not been able to improvise. As a matter of fact I have been given a chance on a number of occassions but I simply can't improvise. I play Macedonian music which is very dynamic and it relies alot on improvising. Can anyone help with any sort of exercises to help me with improvising with this style of music. I am limitted in reading music and mostly play by year".
Many thanks.

Try playing along with CDs....working to "match" what ever the lead line is....then use your scale technique to go "beyond" what is played on the CD. Let your your imagination flow. It's kind of hard to teach inovation, but the best thing is to just "hear" what you want to play and play it.
I'm an old pro musician(though not clarinet)....and can tell you....play what you feel. Right or wrong...makes no difference. Just play...and when people respond....YOU'RE THERE.......
