 Duets...

I am looking for a great bass clarinet duet for Contest in the spring. It will be two HS bass clarinetists. I would really appreciate if it was at least a Grade 3 or harder, but probably not harder than your average Grade 5.

Any suggestions welcome!

Early music 'cello duets might fit the bill.
Also a search on the Bass clar BB (yahoo) might prove useful

Why not play a clarinet duet? There are several good ones in Langenus Vol. 3.

Or ANY duet for that matter. So long as you have to instruments of the same pitch, you can play an oboe duet, basson duet, trumpet duet, flute duet, etc. etc.

The only thing you have to be careful of is the RANGE of the duet.

We could do a clarinet duet, but that would be too easy. Since our main instrument is the bass clarinet, we want one instrument to really excel at, why revert to the old soprano when things get a little tough? Currently we are doing a duet for our Grad Standard in Ensemble in concert band out the the 21 Duets for Clarinet book, playing bass, and having good luck with it.

I was just really interested to know if anyone knew of a good duet written specifically for bass clarinets. I love playing pieces written specifically for the bass, that take into consideration the range of my instrument, better than playing a soprano piece, where I play mostly high notes that aren't the best feature of the bass.

Again, we COULD play on Bb, but why?

I think your best bet for something written FOR a bass instrument would be a cello duet as mentioned above.
