 Jimmy Giuffre

If anyone wants to hear some really good clarinet playing, check out Jimmy Giuffre. It seems like most people have forgotten about this guy, one of the pioneers of free jazz. Anyway, his albums "The Easy Way," and "Flight" are both really good!

But please...this isn't classical music, so if you respond to this posting, try not to mention that this guy has "a bad sound" or that "his tone is spread" because that would just show stuff...

My clarinet playing solely consists of the Jimmy Giuffre method of playing. He was truely amazing!

I cannot speak for 'most' clarinetists, of course, but I certainly have not forgotten about this guy, a true artist (in my opinion) in every positive sense of the term.

I have one Guiffre CD and like his playing alot. But I think they stuck the mic too close to him, as the sound does get a bit piercing at times.

Most of the Guiffre stuff I've heard (... maybe older stuff?) has a real warm, almost airy sound....reminds me of a subtone on a tenor sax.

Why do you guys think Jimmy Giuffre started playing in a free jazz style? I wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that he composed his solos for standard tunes i.e. Mack the Knife off his Easy Way album.
