R-13 - b-flat clarinet, 50,000 series
Author: Richard

I have a b-flat clarinet, R-13, 50,000 series. I understand
it is the most sought after series. I know from the serial
number that it was manufactured between 1945 and 1957. I
want to sell it to pay for my daughter's education. Could
someone tell me how much it is worth and where to go to
sell it? Please e-mail me at trena10@juno.com or call
me at 806-274-5165.

The 50,000 series would be actually between about 1953-1959. If it's a late 50,000 series (56000 or greater) it is most probably a polycylindrical R-13.

AFAIK the early polycylindrical aren't all that much in demand - the ones between 145000 and 225000 have been sought after, at least according to a few people who have posted here and on Klarinet. However, Buffet did come out with a Vintage model which is supposed to be an exact copy of the original polycylidrical design.

The value "depends" - nice R-13s from the late 50s have sold from $500 to $1200 USD recently. A new R-13 costs around $1800 for comparison purposes.

If you are going to sell your horn, even for a good cause. make sure it is something you will not regret. My father gave up his r-13 when quite being a music major. He regreted and went and bought another horn. I would never give up my horn, I need it to survive. you won't be able to get extreme amounts of money.
