 AH! Dreaming terrible things...

on two occasions I had bad dreams about people torturing my clarinet! AH!

One was when people drilled holes in my clarinet, in places there aren't supposed to be holes (I don't mean the bell)... Then I woke up in shock and thanked God it was only a dream...

And then, last night I had a dream there was a giant crack in my clarinet, and that it was letting out air and I couldn't play it! AH! Then I woke up again, and THANK GOD it's only a dream...

I think I'm scared for me clarinet now... AND what do you do when someone tries to take away your clarinet from you when you're practicing, because it's "Christmas break, and insane to practice".... I just curled up in the corner of the band room and said "NO, DON'T HURT LARRY! YOU CAN'T TAKE HIM AWAY FROM ME!"... Then they tried to take my reed so I couldn't play... :(.... it was my last one too... are they saving me from my own insanity? LOL!

I had a dream once that I was at the beach, and I dropped my clarinet in the water. It ended up disintergrating.

but seriously... what's wrong with practicing while other people are just sitting around talking/socializing? I mean, at least I'm doing something productive... They are just using up carbon dioxide, in a less productive way than I am...

It depends on where you are practicing. If you're in the band hall or home, then it's fine. Be glad you don't have four Xboxes going at once. If you're at another place, well... You could cry a river that not everyone likes the sound of a clarinet.

Mary
Unless your friends are vegetables they're using up oxygen and generating carbon dioxide. Don't tell me they took your chemistry book too!

The last clarinet dream I had, I had to play in a festival in a competition. I looked under my bed to get my clarinet, and lo and behold, it was gone! So I walked into the festival trying to find it, and a shining light from the heavens pointed me to a dark corner of the festival in inside that tent, under a rock, was a leblanc opus. I played on that, won the festival, and my prize was (you guessed it) a leblanc opus.

Irony even in my dreams.

I played two concerts Sat. night and when I got home at 10:30 pm, checked the mail. My newly refaced Wells mouthpiece had come ! Yea! I, of course, had to play it. My family, (all musicians) thought I had lost my mind. They are all brass people though so .... there you go.
Keep practicing, Mary.

I'm sorry to have to say this, but imagery in dreams always represents something else - something more personal; your clarinet dreams probably are about some emotional issues that you are working out

That being said, Freud would have a field day with yours

I dreamed a few weeks ago that I picked up my clarinet to practice and all of a sudden all the pads were glued to the tone holes. No keys would move. I woke up abruptly, screaming, almost chocking in total horror. Granted, my husband didn't ask me what my nightmare was about; how silly, such a scream for nothing. Well I do know deep inside this dream has nothing to do with clarinets or bad pads or even musical performance anxiety. Something worst and deeper I haven't quite figured out yet. And I am not sure I want to know. Have fun. Freud!

I had a bad dream some years ago that it was New Year's Eve and I was playing tenor sax and cowbells in a lousy Top-40 band for a bunch of drunk senior citizens at a VFW hall. I pinched myself, at which point I realized it wasn't a nightmare at all, it was actually happening to me!

Mary, for Christmas have your family or friends buy you a couple of boxes of reeds, then you won't panic about anyone stealing your last one, because NO clarinetist should ever be down to his/her LAST reed.

And consider keeping a backup clarinet (maybe a plastic Vito or Yamaha or Bundy or a new Forte) in your closet just in case Larry the Primary Clarinet gets kidnapped by brass-playing terrorists............

I had a dream once that my swab got stuck in my clarinet, and then I tried to get advice from this bulletin board, but all I got were postings about Hitler's set up....

Todd,

ah yes, the oboe player... I don't know it that's what my dream was about, but I really appreciate when people refer back to old wisecrack posts.

The musical director of the show im playing in at the moment (music man) is only 17 but an awesome conductor, keeps having dreams about the show, such as him having to climb thru the pit onto the stage to an angry crowd who are throwing tomatoes at him...And when i was going to play the 1st mov of theweber concerto with an orchestra my teacher had a dream that i was in hospital and she had to play it...and she got really scared coz she hadnt played it properly for ages...hehehe.

Aussiegirl: thanks for resurrecting this discussion.

"climb thru the pit onto the stage to an angry crowd who are throwing tomatoes at him"

Your conductor is clearly trying to re-enter the womb and is anxious about being on his own in the world. Do you know how long he breast fed?

I had a dream about my clarinet once. I was camping with my theory teacher (already odd) and for some unknown reason I had my clarinet with me. I ended up leaving my clarinet in the tent while my theory teacher and I went to a music conference of some type. All of a suddon I had an erie feeling and I had to go back to the tent to check my clarinet. Sure enough, someone had stolen the two main joints but left the bell, barrel, and mouthpiece. My dream ended with me doing a james bond misson searching for my clarinet, first at the music conference, and last at a grocery store. Yes, a grocery store, where I was hidding behind a frozen pizza while stalking some poor innocent bystander in the frozen meat section. I never did find my clarinet in that dream.

Melissa.

I also had a dream about my clarinet once... I was in a hotel with some friends on a long trip we were taking. We were waiting for everyone to arrive so we sat down at a random card table in the hallway. I got my clarinet out and it started melting. The wood was sticking together and my keys were dripping off. I was very worried about what my dad would say. ..AHHH!

To paraphrase Freud, sometimes a clarinet is just a clarinet.

When people dream about their clarinet being harmed or destroyed or about not being able to perform because they lost their instrument or it's not working properly, I believe they are just experiencing their own insecurities in the form of a dream.

In my dreams about playing, I'm usually unable to read the music, am unfamiliar with it or just can't find it. (Sometimes the music is in some new form of notation involving colorful shapes.) You can see that my biggest fear is not in regard to my instrument not working. When I have a dream where I'm in the right place in the right time, can find the music and am able to play it, I take it as a good sign regarding my state of mind.
