Any info on a Grabet clarinet?

I recently acquired a grenadilla wood Bb clarinet made by Grabet. I have searched on-line and at the library and have found no reference to this maker. The instrument is probably at least 30-40 years old and has a serial number of 5659. Any info on this maker would be appreciated.

I don't know of the maker, but that doesn't mean much, since many small companies bought unmarked clarinets from large makers and "stenciled" on their own names.

Mark has the New Langwill Index, which is the most comprehensive listing of maker names, and he will be able to tell you if the Grabet name was large enough to be noticed by a very thorough researcher.

Another possibility is that the actual name is different, but that the engraving has gotten filled up with dirt and grease. Try scrubbing the trademark with an old, wet toothbrush to see whether you have read it correctly.

Best regards.

Uh, a Buffet modified by Walter Grabner, maybe?
Just an idea.

These were actually made by Herbert Wurlitzer for private use amongst the finest professionals. They were highly prized and coveted.

If they became available (usually after death of the owner) the word was to **Grabet*** while you can.

(just kidding)
