Hi guys!
I saw a great performance by Martin Frost on Friday. He played Weber´s first concerto with Tapiola Sinfonietta here in Finland. The concert hall was almost full, just a couple of empty seats here and there.
The orchestra started with a work called Nummisuutarit by a finnish composer Uuno Klami. They played it well, after all there are many young players in the orchestra and the concertmaster is somewhere between the age of 20 and 30, but somehow the audience were just waiting for the soloist.
After they had played the first piece, was the time for Weber. If someone don´t know it already, Frost is also a professional dancer. He was using it his ability to dance also in the concerto. He really put his soul into the piece you were able to not just hear, but also see it (literally). He was shaking his head along the music and sort of tap-dancing. He used circular breathing and so he was able to play pretty long phrases. His playing wasn´t technically perfect and the difficult section with the horns in the second movement wasn´t in tune all the time and you could even hear a little squeak in the end of the third movement, but those didn´t spoil his performance.
After the concerto, audience demanded more and he said he would play a short improvisation. It was incredible! He linked modern music and jazz together. Really intresting!
In the other half, the orchestra played a serenade by Brahms. Just before they started I saw a guy with blond hair and a quilted jacket walking to sit into the crowd. It was Frost himself! He was so modest that he kindly listened the second part. I find it pretty funny!
I hate to say it, but I think the orchestra played the last piece pretty badly, but anyways it was a great concert in general.
