I recently purchased a 1956 Buffet R16 (19 keys and 7 rings) and when I opened the case, there was some original papers from the 50's with the clarinet. There was a guarantee certificate/registration card from Carl Fischer along with a Care of Woodwind Instruments pamphlet also from Carl Fischer. The most interesting was a card reading:
IMPORTANT
"Buffet-Crampon clarinets are tuned with the standard bore Buffet mouthpiece. The chamber of this mouthpiee is 2 1/8" or 53 1/2 mm in length. Some mouthpieces on the market vary from this standard, and use of them will cause the Buffet to play out of tune".
There are no Carl Fischer markings on this card so I assume that it came from the Buffet factory. The 2 1/8" long bore is the straight circular section measured from the end to the section where the walls start. There is a picture of a mouthpiece with the shaded bore area also on this card. I thought this might be interesting to anyone who has a similar Buffet. By the way, I also scored the original Buffet mouthpiece with the three lines toward the bottom as part of the purchase. (The clarinet plays great as well!) The original mouthpiece seems to be closest in intonation versus all my other mouthpieces. I guess The Buffet company had it all figured out! Just thought I'd share this info with all of you!

I also have had this mouthpiece bore measurement information card for many years. At the bottom of the card is a dotted area to be cut out and used as a way of measuring the mouthpiece bore. The card/ruler is inserted into the mouthpiece at the tenon end and if it goes into the mouthpiece right up to the line on the card, it is the correct length. As a bit of further information, I just inserted the card/ruler into a Buffet mouthpiece, a Hawkins on a Zinner blank and a J & D Hite mouthpiece and all measured exactly up to the line on the ruler. Perhaps this little card should be reissued. By the way, I really think it came from Carl Fischer but of course was a Buffet related item.

I have a Buffet mouthpiece from about 1981 and an Evette from an unknown age (both with three lines down) and they both have the standard 55mm chambers.

Hi,
I just measured some of my MPs and the results were interesting.
At 55 mm (drumroll, please) were all my Van Dorens, Portnoys, C Crowns, and Stowell Wells Schneiders. At 54 mm were some of the Riffault blank Ideals, and at 53.5 mm were all the old selmer MPs like a HS*, HS**, B, C*, and D*.
I need to check these MP with my R13 as well as my other clarinets and see what pitch differences can actually be measured.
Interesting! I love a good mystery.
