 Professional clarinet?

Hi, I am a 16 year old student in Canada and am new to this board. I currently own a Selmer American 100 wood clarinet, but it has been giving me a lot of trouble including undue resistance and various other small things. I am looking at a second hand professional clarinet or a new student clarinet of higher quality. I've played clarinet for nearly six years and have a budget of around 1000 USD. I've seen second hand R13's on ebay, but please reply with any other suggestions and tips.

Hi,

I am a believer in looking for good, used, professional clarinets and over the past several years have gotten a Selmer 9*, a Selmer 9, a Leblanc L 200, a Leblanc Dynamic 2, and an R13 (Academy model) all on eBay. Pick any two of these, throw in a complete repad for both and you might have to spend the $1,000 US you mentioned. Very good value and wonderful clarinets; in fact, I have not had the heart to sell off any of them (my wife says to hang on to them).

I now play the L 200 exclusively; perfect intonation through all registers of the instrument with an assertive voice but the R13 and the Dyn 2 are really nice as well. See the numerous notes about eBay purchases on this BB, insist on a short trial period, and send the clarinet off to John Butler or one of the many other good techs that frequent this BB and you will be very satisfied. If you need a new case, you can find what you want easily and cheaply.

HRL

PS Maybe your Selmer needs a complete overhaul? That could be a nice extra instrument to have around.

Hank says it all very well,, I have several of the same, quite satisfied with having to decide which to play. I recently bot a Selmer Omega [ yes, a USA model] beautiful and IMHO a fine player, it has several improvements beyond the other Selmer USA models. It cost me less than $400, and I view it as an unappreciated pro cl. You might look around. Luck, Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

I think the best all purpose professional clarinet on the market is still the Buffet R-13. I'm not a member of the Buffet Mafia, as I have also endorsed Leblanc professional clarinets--just speaking from experience of trying to match tones with others in an orchestral setting. No matter where you go you'll be able to play well with others with the R-13. I've actually liked many Leblancs better--but ended up selling them and sticking with the R-13 for that very reason. Life is easier.

As a fellow Canadian, I can tell you about my experiences.

Your problem with resistance could be you are using too hard a reed or too closed a mouthpiece. What are you using? Changing these items will save you a lot of money.

Test drive some different brands with your standard mouthpiece/reed setup and decide if you like Selmer, Leblanc or Buffet.

Your budget is adequate to pick up a good R13. Make sure the horn is re-conditioned (pads replaces and mechanism adjusted) already else you will spend $180+ to get it serviced.
