 Alternate's not bad...considering
Author: Nicole Y.

Hey all.
I just found out that I am 5th alternate. Well it's a harder band. New level. New braces *I hate these things even though I know they're good for me. My tone is still shot and I got them on November 30*. Shot tone. Still. not bad. At least I got the best technical ability in the band. The only thing I got killed on was my tone. *sob* So maybe it'll come back. I'm trying to seal up the leaks...

The Freshman,
Nicole Y.

The thing to remember about braces is that they don't last long as you don't do bad things. Don't chew gum, etc, and they'll come off in 18 months like mine. You'll be tortured(I was), but don't worry. Be careful and they'll come off soon.

For my region. I was trying out for all-region. Last year in Junior Band I made 10th chair. This year in Clinic I made 5th Alternate.

Your orthodontist should has some wax you can put over your braces while playing.

I found the wax to be very uncomfortable. It was something though. The parafilm works very well. You can get it from a high school chemistry teacher.

Are the braces really causing you that much trouble? I had braces for 28 months and I can't say they effected my tone at all. My technical ability wasn't ever great but I was fairly proud of my tone. I never bothered with wax either it just kept falling off and was more trouble then it was worth.

auditions are rough anyway. your placement depends on how you play at that very moment and how everyone else played at their moment. they are NOT a judge of your level. it sucks, i know, but thats how it goes. join another ensemble. your community band, or youth orchestra. those are so much more fun anyway.

Is braces really bothering you? Why? It never did bother me. In fact, I think my tone has gradually improved over the 25 months that I had braces. The only thing I remember is the first few days being horrible, then..it was fine. I have heard alot of complaints about braces though. Maybe im just different.......
