‘Twas the night before mid-state, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;
Everyone knew that tomorrow would come
The auditions would be long and only permit some
And on this dreary cold, cold night
When everyone was sitting trembling with fright
There laid a clarinetist in her bed
Frightened to death for she knew she would be dead
For tomorrow is the day that everyone fears
Some even walk away with saddening tears
The auditioners tremble as the walk in the room
For their nervousness will take over them soon
The woodwinds double check their malicious reeds
So to make sure that they aren’t going to squeak
Although that’s something they can’t prevent
It’s always nice to be ready for it
It’s never the reed, it’s always the embouchure
That makes you squeak and feel unassured
But never mind all of this insanity
Why should nervousness overtake your psyche
I will not worry, for I shall prevail
Although there may not be much of a tale
For when I’m older I shall tell
Of the day I went through complete and total hell
I prayed and strived for glory and valor
And through God’s will I came out a survivor
Not only did I survive I also prevailed
For I did my best, although I might fail
And then this story can’t be told
To all generations young and old
About a girl who was terrified
And still prevailed and came outside
Of her own little world she always knew
And out into the real one with hope that was new
But we’ll just see the outcome of this game
And maybe I’ll come out not ashamed
For I’m that girl in question you see
You heard right that girl is me…
AND I’M GOING TO DIE!

Hmmmm . . . it's 11 PM in Tennessee . . . (which I presume from your IP). Maybe a good thing to do would be to get some sleep! (hint hint hint )

Well, got past scales and got to the second sightreading (which I screwed up on)... Then played both my pieces about just like I've been playing them (with a couple of squeaks, grr... :() But overall, I didn't completely freak out... Which is good... they don't post results till after 8, so I'll let y'all know...

Well you're going to have to wait longer, because I scored 2 tickets to the Nashville Symphony tonight! Huzzah! One of the judges was just looking for someone to give it to, because he couldn't make it because of
mid-state... SO, I was like "I'LL TAKE THEM! I'VE NEVER SEEN/HEARD A REAL LIVE SYMPHONY BEFORE!" So that was awesome, because now I get to go hear the Nashville symphony... Gershwin and Gould... hehe...
And then, I will tell y'all the outcome... Or y'all can go to www.mtsboa.org look for Mary Goodwin under Mid-state results/Senior High (or High school)/Bb Clarinet's... And if you don't see it, I guess I didn't make it... but oh wells... I've only been playing for a year and 4ish months

ur reacting better than i did, when i tried out for all state in 8th grade and didnt make it, it really got to me. btw like u said, only been playing for a year and so, so everyone else def. has an advantage over you, a HUGE advantage, and didnt u say u don't take private lessons, thats and even bigger disadvantage. Though u being a member of this board is an advantage that will pay off in the future id bet.

I do take private lessons... And last year I tried out for Jr. High mid-state (after playing for bout 3 months) and didn't make it... I cried and everything... But ya know... it isn't worth it... I played as well as I could and the judges didn't accept my best... And so SCREW THEM! hehe... thank you and have a good night...

I'm sorry you didn't make it but I applaud you for the effort you've put forth and wish you the best in the future. Don't worry, success will come with hard work and dedication so keep trying and aim high.

Don't take it too hard. You did your best. And like you pointed out, you've only been playing for a year and three months! Not to mention you are a FRESHMAN in high school. You have plenty more opportunities. Keep on plugging away!

Nice try, even though you didn't make think about it this way. You had to get quite a bit better after prepareing for mid-state so much. So you should have a much better chance next year! When you do make it though Prepare for one of the funniest weekends of your life O_O!(I can't try out of midstate anymore...I moved now im stuck in ga and all-state trys are next weekend....and from the looks of it....IM SCREWED ;_;)

Hey, Mary -
Just think - you've had this much experience already, next year will be a blast. You've worked really hard and learned a lot, it's going to pay off. Hang in there!
