We are playing a piece called THE MAGIC OF ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER; it is sort of a medley. The first section is the tune of Jesus Christ Superstar. I'm playing 2nd clarinet part and it calls for fast Bb-C (3rd line to 3rd space) hand movements. I have found that I can use the throat tone alternate fingering for C by just adding the two top silver keys with my right index finger to the standard Bb. Is this considered cheating? I know it is not as pretty a C, but it works. Michael

This fingering is "standard" for trills from Bb to C. I don't see why it can't be used on a fast passage that goes Bb to C and then back down again. It wouldn't be useful if you are going Bb to C and on up the scale.

I agree, took me a long time to find many of the useful alternates. Most of our "good books" have at least a few of the helpful fingerings, and there are some comprehensive publications, look around [veni-vidi-vicie {sp?}]. Don

Check one of Sneezy's "gratis" sites: <B><A href=http://www.wfg.sneezy.org>http://www.wfg.sneezy.org, The Woodwind Fingering Guide</a></b> for standard & alternate fingering. Support of sites like this is one of my goals - but it takes time and money to keep them running. Most "free" places like Geocities have annoying banners <i>and</i> limitations on traffic.

If you have and A, or access to one, you could always play the passage on that. I did that once on the last movement of Four Scottish Dances. The incredibly awkward became easy.

Great suggestion Jessica, also consider the C clar. [if you can find one!], its an easier non-written-out transposition than to the A clar, I had to write-off a part for A in the Shipoopi ballet of Music Man, years ago to cut it. Don

If you have an older clarinet it may be tuned for the use of the top trill key only to make the "C". That's the case on my Martels. It is more awkward though.

I'd do anything to make any "hard" fingering easier. For example how would you finger Eb to C without the alternate C key? What you are doing is by no means cheating. I look for alternate fingerings all the time!
