I have the R-13 model Buffet clarinet. I love the instrument but hate the thumb rest for the sole reason that I can never find a thumb rest pad big enough for the thumb rest. It's kinda frustrating ![[mad]](http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/smileys/smilie9.gif)

some folks just get some plastic tubing from a hardware or autoparts store, and snip off 1/2" and use that.
i use cork - i glue on a piece of thick cork

fuel tube from an auto parts store
i used to ask esp for VW beetle tubing, as this was the first car i got it from, but now just ask for general "fuel tube"
a long bit (1m?) cost hardly anything
it's easy to cut up- reed knife or scissors
many of my friends, former students, current students and professional colleagues etc have used one bit for many years without problems (or losing it)

I have the BG thumb cushion and it stretches over my R-13 with a bit of pushing. But, I've also used tubing and it works great!

I use silicon (not rubber) surgical tubing. It's semi-transparent, light brownish-yellow, and about 1/2" outside diameter and 1/8" inside diameter.
I got a 3' piece at a surgical supply store 20 years ago and have been cutting 1" pieces off it ever since. Wet the inside with saliva and it slides right over the thumbrest and lasts about a year.

I bought a number of $1 sponge rubber T R C's, until I realized that some of the "rubber" pencil/pen "grips, cant be cut to length and are very cheap !! Don

take a peice of soft cloth and glue it to the thumb rest. make sure you wrap it around the edges because i dont know about you but mine really digs into my thumb

what's really the point of a thumb squishy? my 2nd chair player has one and I played with hers, but I don't really need one. I have a Buffet E13 also with a fat thumb rest, that helps by distributing the weight, wood isn't that heavy though. :-P it builds character, haha! :-)

You can also pad your thumb. Years ago when I started playing I developed a distinctive callous on my thumb. Now, years later I have no callous and use the "as issued" thumb rest with the pencil "foam" or just cork mentioned above. Some 'as issued" thumb rests are angled, some are straight across. When you finally find what works for you you won't have any thumb problems.

We should look up the ref's on pewd's post, but YES, there are larger size "sponge rubber" TRC's for saxes [same high price, Alexi, but affordable !]. I use the C's on all horns to increase the thumb area which supports the horns, and do other T L C's to allow me to pay more attention to the music and even the conductors ! Good thot, BobD, Don
