Why does it only "sing" on "My Way" ?
Author: Sue G

Hi,
I'm just wondering if any of you have the same issue as me - or rather did have in the early days of your playing - my problem is that my clarinet only "sings" for me on certain tunes - well one really and that's Sinatras "My Way" - apologies to all you classical players out there - I only play easy listening music and wouldn't consider myself a "musician" really.

I do like the tune and enjoy playing it (it's right at my level !) - could that be the sole reason ???
I have to say that on others it sounds pretty tinny sadly :(

Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks
Sue

My clarinet "sings" to me pretty much only on songs that I like... Primarily because since I like the song, I put more work into it... So, I dunno...

My and repaired student cls sing [in "show-off"] on 76 Tmbs, [from open G across the break!] and on a beautiful arpeggio-like [sp?] part from L'Arlesienne Suite 1, not sure of the piece [2 , 3 perhaps] and a few others I've played. Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

My clarinet belches on nearly everything I play. Sometimes it sneezes first.

Sue G:

I think I know how you feel. Sinatra's "My Way" is also my favorite to play on the clarinet.

Perhaps the reason why I gravitate towards easy listening ballads is because I have a tendency to "sing" into the instrument. I love slow, expressive music...it just seems to come forth naturally from me.

Interestingly, I enjoy listening to all kinds of clarinet music but when I begin to play, I seek the expressiveness of slow ballads.

Another one you might enjoy playing is "Stranger on the Shore". I enjoy Pete Fountain's version but when I play it, it just naturally comes out a lot slower. I can play it faster...but it's not as much fun then. Maybe I just need to "feel" the notes rather than just "play" them.

""I only play easy listening music and wouldn't consider myself a "musician" really.'''

Don't underestimate yourself - I certainly don't - as a jazz player. Music is music as long as it is played well.

Draw your own conclusions...

What key do you play My Way in? Possibly one where the third note of the scale is one of the prettier ones?

Maybe since you don't think the other songs sound as nice as "my way", you subconsciously think that your clarinet also doesn't sound as nice as when you play "my way".

Sorta like how you might like a certain song sung by an artist, but when he sings a different song (one you like less) his voice never sounds quite as good. It IS the same voice though . . . .

Hi,
Thanks for your replies folks - I think it must be because I enjoy playing it so much that I really get into it somehow.
I appreciate the comment "Music is music as long as it is played well " - I think that the only thing I play reasonably well is "My Way" - non musicians would say that I'm a musician but I don't believe that a musician would agree .......... well not yet anyway - one day !!!!
I play it in D major, as I do most of the songs I play - as usually it's for folk to sing along too and they like to sing in C !

Dan - It's the slow ballads for me too ! and "Stranger on the Shore" is another favourite of mine - it was the one which I always wanted to be able to play and the reason for selecting the clarinet - I don't play it as well as I do "My Way" at the moment but hopefully soon I will be able to.

Thanks again
Regards
Sue :)

I like to play Stranger on the Shore along with Acker. Also love to play ballads and slow blues. I don't know if my clarinet sings, but it does snort, gargle, gasp and wheeze. The only thing I cannot get it to do is growl. I just keep on tryin!

Elvis's version is really great.

Maybe you're just more relaxed playing it because you like it and you know you play it well. I feel that way about Stranger on the Shore.
