Any suggestions re: which "Fake" books are the best---I understand Hal Leonard now has a "Real" book available. I'm interested in standards, show tunes, etc. Thanks!

The best is: "The Real Book". Fifth Edition. They come in Concert C, Bb, Eb, and also bass clef and I have seen a vocal fake book also. You can easily play a jazz gig with these.

Just remember they're all 'fake books.' The term 'Real Book' is just a play on words used by a certain line of fake books. I agree with Miles that these are probably the best to go with. Lots of songs, good quality work, and transposed versions available. Not many fake books can claim that.

The Real Book (3 vols., available in C,Bb, Eb and bass clef) and Real Vocal Book were put together in a milieu around the Berklee school in the 70's, I think. They have many notorious errors and a peculiar bias towards material that is no longer used, but ... they have become pretty universal. They are illegal, having been done entirely without permissions.
The New Real Book series is published by Sher Publications. It bears almost no resemblance to the Real Books, except in the stated purpose of serving for sight reading on gigs. The appearance is beautiful and clear, the opposite of the other series. The selection overlaps somewhat, and includes some pop tunes and "as played by" versions that don't interest me. But the scholarship is the very best, backed up with reference to the originals and the customary keys and harmony. There are 3 volumes, another called "Standards", and I think a Latin one as well.
Very recently Hal Leonard has issued a series which is said to be an approximate reproduction of the Real Books, but published with legal permissions. This is gratifying, and the price is even less than the usual cost for the illegal volumes. Where I live the Real Books go for $30 ea. Hal Leonard charges $25 for theirs, and I heard that Amazon charges $19 (for several hundred tunes!).

"The Real Book" Fifth Edition is entirely illegal and no music store will have it on display. That doesn't mean that they won't have it in the back and you have to ask for it (they may bring it out) to get it or find it online. I've seen online offers for the real book series on PDF. They are illegal as none of the tunes are properly licensed. So they are illegally printed without having the publishers permissions and paying royalties. The Hal Leonard series would be legit of course.
That being said it doesn't really make a difference and I'd get the real series as they are very good and comprehensive. Doom on the publishers for not making anything nearly as good.

Didn't realize that there were this many "Real Books." The ones from Berklee originated the name, but the ones from Sher are the ones you want. Very, very nice, and well worth the price.

For society gigs (at least in the NYC/Long Island area) these are the books most commonly used by the older players (who have most of the tunes memorized).
Here are scans of the covers and a sample page of the listing of tunes for each one.
There was also a Bb handwritten version of Volume 1 which circulated around (not that I would know who had a copy)
I have never seen any of the books for sale commercially ...GBK

Yes, they aren't publically for sale, yet they are certainly out there. Ironically, even the head of a major association (not RIAA but basically the equal of it) plays out of the Real book for his quartet.
