Anyone played Rodney Bennet's Conversations for two clarinets? Should these be played strict time, or should they be played as though they were jazz pieces? Thanks.

What do you mean? Why is a 'jazz piece' any different from reading something in time?
Well anyway to my knowledge they're NOT jazz pieces. At least start off by learning these pieces with their correct rhythm. Then you can do what you want really - they're great pieces!

Maybe beejay means whether the pieces should have a "swing" feel, or whether they should be played "straight". I don't know the pieces, so I'm taking a wild guess here :-)

My husband and I enjoyed playing them, but it has been quite awhile. I'm not sure about any "should be played...", but I don't remember feeling like we wanted to swing any of them. However, if you are referring to tempo and the possibility of some well placed rubato, that is certainly a possibility. Is there one of the movements in particular that you are referring to?
