 Lower-end hard disk multitrack recorders

Question for the techies:

I see that there are some new compact HD multitrack recorders available
from Tascam, Edirol, and others. Any experience with these for recording
clarinet/piano via mic (eg shure '57) or recording old tapes from reel-to reel decks (not player...eg Aiwa 3000D) onto HD.?

They seem less combersome than using a PC or laptop with more recording time than minidisc or smartcard. BUT.....a lot of the bells and whistles are for mixing electric keyboards and guitars, which I don't need

I would like to record clar/piano and also back up some old tapes onto CD
without moving my PC from my office area into the living room (where the piano resides). I have no problem with a bus connection to the PC later for editing (Nero sound editor)

Comments, suggestions, etc.

Oh yeah...I did look into the minidisc option and did a search on the Clar archives, but it is difficult to discern which model has mic line-in, etc, and many of the suggested models are not available, or have controls that are more for mp3 downloads.

There are a number of modest dedicated multitrack units out now from nearly every manufacturer (Akai, Roland, Yamaha, Tascam, etc.) that record full-resolution digital audio to hard disc. If you are looking though at the handheld multitrack units like the Edirol R-1 which are very clever devices and great for use as sketch pads for musicians, they frankly stink as archival recorders.

What kind of budget are you talking about?

thanks msloss

The price range is that of the TascamDP01, or modestly highler.
I have a Shure mic that I now record into my PC but not in room with piano.

The major archive stuff would be from my tapes. (Old orch. broadcasts in mono that I took from radio, or of me playing some solo concerts too many ages ago to mention). The material would be transfered later to my PC, edited there, and likely placed on a CD-R.

The other use would be recording clar.with piano acc (Mrs. S.) , editing out downtime stuff, and using it for self critique.

Tascam more or less invented the home recording biz when they started converting Teac 1/4" reel-to-reels for multitrack use. The DP01 is the latest incarnation of the PortaStudio concept, and is probably about as good as you are going to do in that price range. The only other thing I would suggest looking into is a USB or FireWire interface from MOTU, Edirol, MAudio and others for your computer. You can run 50' of mic cable without any real problems if you don't want to move your computer. It might be a way to get much higher quality circuitry for the same price because you are just buying mic pres and an interface, and not a hard drive and operating system. Of course, you give up the convenience of having the controls all right in front of you.

Good luck with it.

hmmm
50 feet of wire would do it.
Just have to be careful not to trip over the fish tank while running to turn on the wave editor.

Thanks. Anyone else want to weigh in this?

msloss....ever consider a career in advertising? thanks muchly

Already had one in marketing. I think I'll stick to music and studio work from here out.
