Recently i was a part of the VCU clarinet choir and i noticed that the difference in clarinets was regional. It appeared to me that the majority of northern virginia clarinets played on Buffet Festivals whereas the southern clarinets, like myself, played on Buffet R-13. I want as much insight on this situation as you can give!

Keil, only a guess - but did you check their local music store? There are some places that sell Festivals for barely more than an R13 (such as Brook-Mays), so it ends up being a good buy. Only certain dealers are allowed to sell the Festivals.

In addition to Mark's answer, consider this. If a majority of teachers in the Northern Virginia/D.C area use the Festivals, their students might also use Festivals. If many of the teachers in the Southern Virginia area use R-13s, their students might also use the R-13. This may not be the truth, but it does offer an alternative solution.

i'm from chicago and leblanc opuses are everywhere, b/c of mr. combs. i have never seen or played a festival Bb, but i have a festival a clarinet and i love it. i tried the r-13 prestige and festival, and i love it~! are the Bb's comparable?

WHy the Festival is so hard to find? Mark, Can you
give me a list of store who sell the festival?
I have heard Ricardo is playing the greenline
festival now and I wonder does the mail order store
carry the greenline festival. I think the greenline
is a good idea. Imagine you can have horn that play
the same for 50 years even in different temperature
and humidity

Woodwind&Brasswind had Festivals but you have to go to the store to buy one. They're not allowed to send them through the mail.

Andy - the Festival is a model sold under "special rules". You'll find that it's a common thing used by many, many manufacturers as an incentive for the stores to do something - a certain inventory level, or rack space & placement, etc.

The Festival comes silver plated, with Ab/Eb lever, unstained wood, register tube repositioned about 2mm higher than the R13. Slightly different tone, very good intonation.

I personally purchased my Festival from Brooks-Mays here in South Central Texas. Brooks-Mays is a VERY large retailer. I can see where they would get preferential retailer treatment from Boosey and Hawkes, the company that owns the Buffet clarinet brand. Let me give you an example or two of how much sales one single store in this chain can do.
Last Fall (about mid September 1999), I went into my local B-M store to fetch a box of reeds. No big deal, right? Flat wrong. No reeds were available, not even junky ones. There were no music books, no ligatures, no gadgets (tuners, etc.) in the store at all. The shelves were wiped out and picked clean. The front of the store looked like a tornado had hit it. There were about a dozen E-11s ready for sale on a large table with sales papers scattered all over the place. I asked the salesman about the E-11s. He said they were critically low in stock. What??? Over a dozen E-11s and they are LOW?? Yep. They had sold over 150 E-11s during the previous 2 weeks.
By the way, a couple of weeks before I purchased my Bb Festival back in 1996, a single customer purchased 24 Bb Festivals sight unseen after test playing the demonstrator model Festival on the display shelf.
Gee, I think I'm in the wrong business...
