Brands most recommended on here . . . (in no particular order)

Yamaha
Buffet
Selmer
Leblanc

Those are the "Big Four" that you'll hear about.

I personally will vouch for Amati (at least their 'pro' line instruments are very good, and I've heard good things about their student lines as well)

And the newest out on the market (and with very favorable reviews as well) is the above mentioned "Forte"

Also out there is the Tom Ridenour TR-147 which has had very good reviews.

Pricewise, you're looking at around 300 dollars for an entry level, good clarinet from the above "big four" makers, Amati student level, and the forte. The tr-147 is more at around 750.

Don't be afraid to try used instruments either. There's a classified section on this site (look to your right as you read this post . . . it's in that list).

Also, VERY important is the mouthpiece you use. Usual recommendations are the Hite Premier, Clark Fobes Debut, Pyne Polycrystal, and the Vandoren 5RV Lyre. If you opt for the Forte (which would probably be a very good choice), it comes with a very good mouthpiece so you won't have to worry about that.

Have fun!

In that case, check out http://www.forteclarinet.com, as you're unlikely to find the Forte in any local (or even national) music stores.

If you are comfortable with on-line auctions, you can also purchase the Forte clarinet from a well-respected dealer on ebay for under $400, complete with case, mouthpiece, ligature, cap, silk swab and cork grease. (I have no association with that dealer)
