 Gotta Question
Author: Jeff
Date:   2000-01-22 13:25

I just got my new R-13 on Thursday. I have an Honors Band that practices on February 15 all day. Is it ok to play my new one for so many hours straight so soon or should I play my old one?

Thanks,

Jeff

You should have received a maintenance leaflet with your R13. In it, I quote:

<i>"To prevent cracks on the body
1) In the case of a new instrument, do not play it continuously for more than 30 minutes daily during the first month
...
</i>

yeah, well they're not as fragile as oboes. but within one week of buying it, and it is winter, and that is a poor environment to break in a clarinet.

Too bad it's not a Greenline, which probably could have been had at the same price.

Even afeter break-in, it might be better to refrain from playing it outside and to use plastic clarinet and plastic reed.

NO. :( I am still in the process of breaking in mine and have to wait until next Friday until I can practice on it like I usually do. I bought my new R-13 on Jan. 6th and have to break it in for a month. :( I know that it is neccessary, but you shouldn't just go out and play it like that. You can risk cracking it, expanding the wood so the rings become loose, and other things.

I know that it is like 3 weeks since you bought the horn, but you should still take care of it. I don't want to wind up with cracks, and I know you don't want to either. Wait until after a month to play it for hours on end.
