I found an interesting CD recently. It's called "The Commission Project" and it features the American Saxophone Quartet and three different clarinet players...Larry Comb, Paquito D'Rivera and Ron Odrich. There are 4 pieces, each one featuring a different clarinet player (Paquito's on two of them). Each of the pieces has a different flavor which I think nicely compliments the clarinet. I've always liked sax quartets and the addition of clarinet works quite well, I think.

I'm assuming mostly (if not all) jazz compositions? If it's four pieces, are there different movements, or are they long pieces, or is it simply a shorter CD?

there is a good piece by a US composer called Frederick (Ted) Trobaugh for Clarinet and Saxophone Quintet. The piece is called Berkshires, and it's about 12min long- a very beautiful piece.

Larry Combs is featured on Michael Holober's "Views from a Train" (4 movements). Paquito is featured on Gabriel Senanes' Cubamercargie Quintet" ( three movements) and "Quasi An Arabesque" written by D'Rivera and I believe his son. Ron Odrich is on Bernard Hoffer's "The Toy Chest" ( 5 movements). None of them are really jazz per se, and if there is any improvisation, I can't really tell. There are sections with a jazzy feel. and the Paquito features are very latin flavored, obviously. If it helps, the CD is put out by Sons of Sound Productions, Ltd. Maybe they have a site where you could get more info. I guess the fact that three great clarinet players with such different styles could be heard on a single CD was what attracted me originally.
