To all of you with good vision....
I am trying to read the serial number on a Buffet. I think it is 826, but it could be S26.....or maybe that 6 is a G? My guess is 826, even though the
8 looks upside down.
I have attached a photo of the number...it is a little blurry since I had
to enlarge it so much.
I am coming up with manufacture dates of 1893 (82G), 1902 (S26)
or 1928 (826).....which do you think it is?
Thank you in advance!
Sue R.

The number is 826. You can see where the 6 is simply too rounded to be any type of stamped G and you can see where a line crosses from the upper right to lower left making the first number an 8. It could be that this picture is easier to read than the actual instrument due to the lighting.
Take the instrument out into BRIGHT sunlight and hold it at a bit of an angle and try to read it. It's well enough stamped that it should show up reasonably well. The biggest problem with reading serial numbers is that people try to do this under indoor lighting, which is woefully inadequate for the task in most locations.

Thanks Dee, it looks like 826 to me also, but my husband and daughter could not agree on whether the first digit was an 8 or an S....

Looks like an "8" to me also. If you open up the picture in windows with paint or windows picture viewer and magnify it the eight looks quite distinct.
[edit] Excuse me: looks like an 8, not a s to me
