 Boosey and Hawkes

I was given my Dad's old clarinet, it is a Boosey and Hawkes Symphony 1010 Bb Clarinet. I think it is about 50 years old? the serial no starts with 482.

You're a lucky one! They used to be top dog. How's its condition and how's it play? If I remember correctly, it's a bigger bore clarinet and was pretty darned popular in England.

1010,s are great clarinets.B&H stopped making them in the 70s,when
french bore instruments became more popular in the UK.
Many players still use them,including Robert Hill-principle in the LPO.
Some 1010 players have opted for new clarinets(Peter Eaton and Loius Rossi instruments) that still use the same basic bore.
Don,t be taken in by the modern myth that they are out of tune-all clarinets
are out of tune,we just have to compensate here and there.
Listen to any recordings by Jack Brymer,who played 1010s all his life,and
you will realise how they can be made to sound.
