 Famous Clarinetists setups
Author: Biased R13 Guy

Do any famous players play on Luyben ligatures? Also could someone tell me the setups (mouthpiece, ligature, barrel, Clarinet, and optionally reed) of the following players:
Charles Neidich
Frank Cohen
Richard Shillea
and Ricardo Morales?
Thanks, Aaron

Lorin Levee in the LA Phil uses a Luyben. David Howard (3rd Clar/Bass) uses a Vandoren B40 mouthpiece and a Rovner ligature.

Of course things often change, but this is the current info.

I think I saw an ad with Ricardo Morales endorsing BG ligatures. Not sure if he actually uses them or not :)

Yes, Ricardo uses them! A long time ago Ricardo used the Rovner Mark III (back in 1992 when I first met him).

Ricardo plays what he endorses and pays full price for the Backun products (by the way) Barrel and Bell. He plays the Grand Concert Evolution # 4 reed (pretty sure 4)

I think Frank Cohen plays on Buffet Clarinets, his own facings on Zinner blanks, and Gonzales reeds.

Morales uses all sorts of different things but the standard is something like this:

Clarinets: Selmer Recital and Sigs
Mouthpiece: Pyne Bel Canto
Reeds: see davids post
Lig: BG rev.

I'm not famous, but for what it is worth, I use my vintage Chicago Kaspar #14 (bought in 1963) with an Optimum lig (parallel rails ala by old Bonandes) and I don't care much what anyone else has to use to sound good. In fact, no matter what specific mpc or lig I use, I still sound like "me" (for better or worse) and I suspect that the same would go for most clarinetists, including the likes of Ricardo, Larry, Charles, Stanley, Buddy, Pete, RS, Eddie, GBK and even our good friend, Anker. We all have our own personal sounds resulting from our mental concepts and oral configurations that are personally unique and we gravitate toward specific articles of equipement because they tend to compliment our physical and mental attributes and allow us to play/sound more easily like we want to.

However interesting it is to discover what the "better" players are using, I have found that it is more important to find the mouthpiece, ligture and reed set up that works for me and then learn to play it through a consistant, focused, never-ending regimen of practice.

Through friends I discovered your post requesting my set-up. It is as follows:
I have two sets of clarinets--Toscas and R-13's, both of which I use
regularly for performing and teaching.
Mouthpiece--Pyne Bc "Bel Canto" Mouthpiece
Reeds--Rico Grand Concert "Evolution" Size 4's
Ligature--The new Van Doren Leather Ligature--I prefer the metal plate

I'm curious as to why you asked.
All the best,
Richard Shillea
