Hi
A friend of mine is coming to visit from the USA. They can buy a few things for me (which I can't get here) like reeds, etc.
I was thinking of taking a chance and get a bass clarinet mouhtpiece. I consider Clark Fobes (one of the few I haven't tried yet). I think I'll get the AP model with a tip of 1.90. The dilema is if I should get it without trying it first, and I will probably won't be able to return it.
I'd also like to know what is the tip opening of the Bundy 3 and 4 bass clarinet mouthpieces. They are cheap and can surprise me. Juts need to decide which model.
Thank you very much,
Nitai

Try a couple of Clark Fobes' mouthpieces, as well as some Walter Grabner and Roger Garrett pieces, maybe a few J&D Hites too. That should keep you busy during your visit.
The Bundys are currently made of plastic, not hard rubber as they used to be, so watch out. Anyway, their factory facings were never much good --- for what it's worth the Bundy 3s I've had were all much too close and too short, never seen a Bundy 4 so I can't comment. The older hard-rubber Bundy bass mouthpieces were (as far as I can determine) Babbitt BLANKS on which the Bundy name was engraved with little or NO finishing of the facing!

I honestly would not have much problem getting one of Clarks's mouthpieces without having many to try if I had no other choice. He does great work and they are very consistent. He is also a fine bass clarinetist so he knows what a good bass mouthpiece should feel like. I am sure if you tried a bunch you might find slight differences, but doubt you will find any that are lousy.

Thanks for your asnwers but as you can see I wrote:
"A friend of mine is coming to visit from the USA. They can buy a few things for me (which I can't get here) like reeds, etc."
About the Fobes mouthpiece I wrote: "The dilema is if I should get it without trying it first, and I will probably won't be able to return it."
I don't see where you could have misread it... but in case I wasn't clear...
I was in the USA a few weeks ago and they didn't have any Fobes bass mouthpieces in stock (as a matter of fact, Hite wasn't in stock either, and I tried the other two you mentioned David and didn't like them enough), now it looks like they do have the Fobes in stock. A friend can bring it from the USA but I can't try it first (unless you can try mouthpieces telepathically between continents).
Is it a good risk to take since I don't really have a bass clarinet mouhtpiece I'm 99% happy with (100% doesn't exist)?
I'll probably also won't be able to return the mouthpiece either.
Thanks again.

Since we don't understand your situation it's hard to advise. Are you somewhere where you can't get mail? You can always return the Fobes mouthpiece via postal service and I know Walter Grabner will let you return something that way. Not knowing your situation makes it a bit difficult to help you with your dilemna, but no one on this board means anything but good to you.
A Fobes or Grabner mouthpiece would be ideal for you and would be a far, far superior choice to any stock mouthpiece on the market. Even if you couldn't bring one back you would be better off with one of them. They can be mail ordered from Fobes or Grabner's websites to your friend's location and brought to you.

Thank you very much to all that replied, I appreciate your help.
Like I wrote, I've tried Grabner's bass mouthpiece and it wasn't as good as the one I use now, so I won't buy it.
Brenda, about your last line, that is exactly what I intented to do, the question is if it's a good idea to buy it without trying.
Thanks again.
