 Chamber Music with Flute
Author: Ben
Date:   2004-11-18 04:51

Sometime in the Spring I am going to share a recital with a flutist friend. We would like to play something together in addition to each playing our own music.

I have thought of the Introduction and Allegro by Ravel, which may be our first choice, but in case that doesn't work, does anyone have any other suggestions? She doesn't want to do Saint Saens's Tarantella, having done that several times already.

Assuming we do the Ravel, any suggestions on performing it?

HereĀ“s one for You: "Esprit rude/Esprit doux" by Elliot Carter. This is one marvellous killer...

It's Choros #2. A fun piece, but pretty short. Calls for the A clarinet.

There is a really fun set of variations on Carmen by Michael Webster for flute, clarinet, and piano. Not the most profound stuff, but fun anyhow.

Also the Muczynski duos are nice little numbers.

There's also a Sonatine for Flute and Clarinet by Jolivet and I believe there's an arrangement of Prelude to the Afternoon of the Faun for clari, flute and piano. I think the arrangement is also by Michael Webster.

I don't know the Introduction and Allegro. What is it scored for?

the Ravel piece will also need a string quartet and a Harp!!!!!!! (if it's the piece i'm thinking of- i have never heard of a duo for cl/fl by Ravel)
it is stunning music, but features the harp in a much more soloistic role than either the Clarinet or Flute
maybe it is another piece you refer to? it'd be great if it was, maybe some lost duo that has been discovered reccently?
i've got a feeling you mean the Harp piece though, hey- if you can get the musicians do it, it's fabulous (and heaps better than the Debussy arrangement, though all respect to Mr Webster for doing the transcription).

Yeah, I was speaking of the Ravel with harp. Even though the harp may be featured, I thought it might be an enjoyable piece for the recital. I don't know the Villa-Lobos, so I'll look into it.

I have heard the Carter and I like it about as much as all of his other music I have heard.....little to none.

Another suggestion: I composed a piece called "Good Luck!" for flute, clarinet and piano. You can view/listen/print the score and parts using the free "Scorch" browser plugin, here:

Fun, not deep:
Bennett, Robert Russell: Suite for Flute and Bb Clarinet
Gould, Morton: Duo for Flute & Clarinet
Hyams, Alan: Prelude, Blues and Fugue (version for Bb Clarinet and Flute)
Lewin, Gordon: Caribbean Sketches
Lewin, Gordon: Three Latin-American Impressions
Ransom, Don: Prelude and Samba

Other (I have not played all of these):
Bozza: Troise Movements
Nixon, Roger: Three Duos
Ransom, Don: Pavanne
Stevens, Halsey: Five Duos
Tuthill, Burnet: Sonatine in Canon for Flute and Clarinet

Regards

Faure's Dolly Suite for cl,fl, pno.

I think it's another Michael Webster transcription published by International Music. I've done it several times with violin, which also works well.
