 Opinions on some CDs
Author: clarnibass

Hi

I want to order some CDs (with clarinet and mainly bass clarinet) but want to hear isome revies, since I can't really listen to them before I order (only to 30 second samples).

The CDs are:
Fabian Tehericsen - Le Concerto Improvise
Denis Colin - In Situ A Banlieues Bleues
Aki Takase & Rudi Mahall - Duet For Eric Dolphy
David Murray - Ballads For Bass Clarinet

These are the ones that are hard to get (or very expensive) and would like to know if they are worth the effort or price.

Thanks,
Nitai

There was a guy named Terje Lerstad who was giving away his LP (ya know, the 12 inch old school records) for free for just writting him and asking. I think it is searchable in these databases for his posting - was this past summer.

Completely free and has several bass clarinet works and even alto on it!

David Murry's bass clarinet playing got our baby kicking for the first time. It was one of the best live music moments of my life. David and the band were tickled too. I am a fan of David Murry, but haven't bought this CD yet because of the cost.
P.S. we named our kid Reed as a result of his first concert movement.

I remember my first concert movement - I was angry that they wouldn't let me back in until intermission. Since then, I make sure to have my movements before the concert

Larry, I have a question about the number of movements in a Wagner opera, but I'll get into trouble for keeping that metaphor going. So I won't mention it.

To Gardini
I guess you are like a clarinet player and a bookwom. You all love a good reed.

I bought the David Murray CD "Ballads" for bass clarinet. If you're a real fan of bass clarinet you'll probably enjoy the cd...it basically features a straight ahead jazz quartet ( horn, piano, string bass and drums)with Murray on bass clarinet instead of tenor sax. Only one of the tunes is sort of "out ".....most of them are quite melodic. I like it and listen to it quite a bit..... My non bass clarinet playing friends didn't care for it though. By the way if you're ordering this CD be aware that Murray also has another CD entitled "Ballads" which features David on tenor sax. The bass clarinet "Ballads" is an import and expensive....I got mine from Ebay!

D. Murray is certainly worth it, I´d go for his display of strength and jubilant tone. Drop Mahall, he´s a bcl-player from here in Berlin, and severely overrated, he should just play some softer reeds so he´d for once could begin to control his tone; a shame that an impostor like mahall is laying hands on marvellous Dolphy-stuff... The others I know nothing about.
Markus
