OK - I've read the other articles, but I really would like to know for the sake of one of my more adult students: What might be happening and what can be done to keep the burps from coming up. He is not eating or drinking before lessons. His diaphramitic breathing and posture seems to be in good shape and he is not a beginner. Please, no beer jokes. This college kid needs some help.

If it is not food/drink providing the bubbles, then the person is probably swallowing air, perhaps every time he/she swallows saliva.
Perhaps there is a physiological reason. Perhaps consult an ear/nose/throat specialist.

Agreed, he is swallowing air. But, just how it's happening will be interesting to find out. I don't believe its from swallowing saliva....because I swallow saliva "constantly" and I don't burp. Maybe something to do with being nervous.

Aerophagia? perhaps. Gulping air.
Also GERD can do this.
Is the student...ah...hefty?
Tight belt?
Hiatus hernia?
Nerves?
Maybe check with surgeon or gastroenterologist, preferably one who plays a wind instrument or is a trained vocalist.
Speech therapists can also assess mechanisms of this....discoordinated deglutition, visceral swallow, etc.
And ENT doc as mentioned above.
(non-disclaimer...This is real advice:I am a surgeon)

I would follow the reflux line - it's a pretty common problem.
To alleviate the problem, I wonder if a lighter strength reed may reduce backpressure in the instrument...?

Another thought - I've got a daughter (also a clarinet player) who burps extensively because she is lactose intolerant. If something slips by her, that is how she reacts, and exercise (thus, breathing) will aggravate.

Thanks for all the insight - I have taken all comments to heart (or to stomach).
