 Seven String Guitar
Author: wjk

I've been experimenting with a seven string guitar---one that has a low seventh string tuned to an A (an octave below the 5th string A). The new chord inversions are quite delightful and add a nice bottom end to the sound. When a clarinetist plays with a guitarist playing such an instrument, would any new soloing strategies be best? Since many guitar chord voicings are now an octave lower, should the clarinetist solo in a higher register? Thanks!

I wouldn't think so. That A string is the same octave as a bass guitar's highest string (A), is it not? If so, it basically just adds a little more bass, and almost just fills in what the bass line would be. In which case I'd say solo as you would with a NORMAL guitar, but it'll just sound like more of a rhythm section (kind of emulating a bass guitar)

The reason I think this is because I think about Charlie Hunter who plays MEAN jazz on an 8 string guitar. He plays a bass line with his index/thumb and solos over himself with the other three fingers. And when I saw a clip of him playing with a sax and drums, the sax solo'd normally. Didn't stay in the higher register or anything (actually, it was a tenor sax so that's a lower instrument to begin with).

That's the reasoning behind MY theory.
