Well, I don't know if this is of any help, buy the program I use is Logic for Atari. Yeah, I know it's antiquated, but it's the best midi program I've ever used/seen. Finale seems to be big amongst the IBM people though.

I have heard very good things about Logic, but mainly for sequencing, etc., not for notation.
The two big players are Finale and Sibelius, but there are a bunch of other programs that people seem to like pretty well. I use Finale... it has its quirks, but it gets the job done for larger-scale works.

NoteWorthy Composer is a good inexpensive Shareware program. Do a "Search" for previous discussions on this subject.

Finale Notepad is available for personal use free of charge from www.finalemusic.com. I like Finale because they offer several different product that add features above that for lower cost than the complete Finale application. Finale "PrintMusic" offers many features for a fraction of the cost of full Finale or Sibelius. I have used it and am quite pleased.

I have use Cakewalk for writing music 'electronically' for as long as I can remember. Definitely don't use it for sheet music.

I like the Finale family of products. Try out their free product and it will give you an idea how they work. Determine what your needs are and what product will do what you want. You don't really need to go all the way up to Finale. It is quite high end and many of the others will do the trick for simple stuff.

I'll second the NoteWorthy.
If it's speed and utilities you're looking for, NWC won't let you down, although it does fall short in areas such as notation.

I work professionally as an arranger ... I use Mosaic (www.motu.com). But I also own and use Finale and Sibelius ... my idea software package would be a combination of these three programs ...
Without music, the world would be grey, very grey.

If you want to write electronic music there is nothing like Cubase. Nothing even comes close to it today. It's the most easy to use program and the best one. Unfortunately it's expensive and you will need sounds, either on your computer or if you have a synthisyser (spelling?).

Noteworthy Composer is great unless you like bar rests. Bar rests are a big no-no in it.

Ah finally something I can really answer!
Have a look at Sibelius (http://www.sibeliusmusic.com) I work in the field (not for Sibelius) and can tell you without a doubt that there is nothing close. Programs like Cubase and Logic while they have notation as a part of the package are really sequencers at heart and do not have even close to the amount of features as Sibelius or Finale.
Just my two cents.

Yes, for notation I have to agree with Donnie Christian that Sibelius is definitely the best, but for electronic music Cubase is by far better!
First of all, I don't think Sibelius can play audio, only midi. So, if you want to record a cello for example and put effects on it or something like that Sibelius will not be able to do it. This is just an example, Cubase has so many parameters to control the sound too.
To me electronic music is music that is not played by musical instruments but by a computer. You might have live players along with it, or have instruments recorded to what the computer will play. The only genre I think I like in electronic music is 'Electronica'. Sibelius simply can't make music like Square Pusher, Atechqure (spelling?), or Plaid. Even ones I really don't like like Aphex Twin is simply not possible with Sibelius. The same for other music like house, techno, etc. Not personally what I like but not posible to do with Sibelius. (I actually heard one house track that I liked so far, so it is possible to make good houe, for some reason people don't do it)
I admit, using Cubase for notation is probably the worst idea you can think of, so I agree with that, but I don't think notation has anything to do with the question here. Maybe I'm mistaken and didn't know what he meant by electronic music.
