Get Mitchel Lurie # 2 or 2 1/2 for the starter or grand concert #2. The Vandorens are much too inconsistantly for somebody just starting out - the good are very good and the bad are unplayable.
Another really, really great reed to try for him are the Gigliotti Advantage reeds which you can get as #2 (they run a little hard) which would work perfectly with the Yamaha 4C and have a good sound.
