 Buzzing/Vibration Sound
Author: return

My A Prestige has developed an annoying buzz. At first I thought it was caused by switching to Legere reeds, but now I am wondering if I should check and tighten the screws. Any ideas?

Perhaps try playing one of the reeds that didn't buzz?

Maybe a pad has developed a loose skin, or a tonehole needs to be cleaned out?

In addition to vibrating pad membranes, there is a whole host of possible causes, most of them being one metal part (possibly a spring) being very close to contacting another part that it should not be contacting, or a loose part, or lack of lubrication between close-fitting parts of the mechanism.

Another possibility is a slightly loose bell ring, or other body ring.

Usually, my "buzzings" are caused by either a loose bell/barrel ring--due to changing seasonal conditions & dehydration--or, a loose screw (for me, most always the top one on the LH E/B lever (key). Sometimes, keywork that needs oiling will also tend to be noisy and vibrate sympathetically on certain notes. (My loose screw always vibrates symphathetically to B5) Those buzzing sounds can really be annoying to the player (especially me), but are usually not noticed by the audience--unless they are within a short distance from your clarinet and have excellant hearing. :>)

I also experience buzzing when using Legere reeds. I discovered that if the reed is not positioned properly on the mouthpiece it will buzz. Hope this helps.
