 recommended CD's for clarinet repertoire

My son is a third year student of clarinet. Could anyone recommend CD's of clarinet music, especially classical or more traditional music but not limited to that, which I can consider buying? Other than the Mozart clarinet concerto which we have, I don't know what else to buy. thanks in advance for any help/recommendations.

Please take a look at the Amazon.com portion of my web site.

I have a wide variety of clarinet CDs selected with quite a bit of information on each.

I hope you receive many replies, as I too am interested in CDs for my young clarinetist. He (11 yo) is enraptured with Rhapsody in Blue. He's doing the gliss, working on the rip and listens intently to all the nuances. At someone's suggestion on this board I got him the sound track to Fantasia, and the version of RinB is well played on it, though the overall dynamic range of the recording is a little much for kids.

I also just bring home library CD's like Benny Goodman, Klezmer music, clarinet quintets etc. none of which grab him like RiB. And remember with stuff from the library, if you don't like it you can always take it back.

I do not know if they are available in the US, but I would recommend a two-volume CD album called "The Clarinet in Concert" by Thea King and the English Chamber Orchestra, published in England by Hyperion; and "A night at the Opera" by Sabine Meyer and the Zurich Opera orchestra, published by EMI Classics. Highly subjective recommendations, of course, but both these records cover a wide range of very enjoyable classical music. Personally, I am very fond of anything by Crusell. Best wishes.

Nearly every major clarinetist has recorded the two Brahms sonatas, which IMHO are among the best of the major works for clarinet and piano. I particularly like the recordings by Jonathan Cohler, Franklin Cohen and Jack Brymer, but there are many other excellent ones.

one word of caution...clear your chosen recordings with your teacher...very early on I became enamoured with some recital recordings of Reginald Kell...hindemith, Debussy, stravinsky, etc...and a recording of him doing the brahms quintet..I loved Kell's fat tone, expressive vibrato, and idosyncratic interpretations...it took several cycles of prominent american clarinet pedagogues to beat Kell's influence out of me...:)...ouch!!!

regards steve

listen to any recording of the cleveland orchestra conducted by george szell...there are also some recent Harold wright recitals on cd that are wonderful...

I recently bought a CD of Karin Dornbusch, a Swedish clarinetist, playing 20th century clarinet music. I enjoy the CD very much, particularly Sonatina by Bohuslav Martinu, and New York Counterpoint by Steve Reich. Those of you out there who have played these pieces, I would love to hear your impressions of them. Thanks.

All 5 of Harold Wright CD's on the Boston Records label are terrific. Also on Boston Records is the Philadlphia Chamber ensemble. 2 of the three works on this CD have Donald Montanaro playing. His playing is refined and just a pleasure to listen to. I'd urge you to get all these and particularly listen to the connected legato and articulation (in addition to wonderful tone) that both of these artists achieve.

Wind ensembles including clarinet cannot not be excluded:
1)Berliner philhamonik wind octet's Mozart and Beethoven.
2)Marlboro festival series conducted by Marcel Moyse.
