Having just lived through the Reed Conspiracy wars, and awaiting renewed controversy on the mouthpiece insurgency, guess what!?
Yep.......a new ligature has arisen to usurp the energies of our crusade.
Rovner has introduced the EVO-5.
Undoubtedly others will counter with the DEVO. ....I can see it now: "Bringing back the great characteristics of yesteryear"

I was looking on a popular auction site this morning and saw one of those being offered with a Selmer 10 series horn. Does not look like anything new or innovative to me.

I agree that the world probably doesn't need another ligature.
Having said that, at least Rovner's ligatures have a good track record and generally work as advertised for most players --- function over form. Innovation for the sake of innovation makes me nervous.

Great philosophy, Dave, I'll try a bit of mine, that "all generalizations are [at least partially] false, including this one I'm now making" !! Re: innovations, that is a basic requirement for invention which ?may? lead to patents, with which I've had some association over the years. I'll look for a new Rovner patent, to be in accord with this thread, MC/GBK. Don

To follow up with a search of Rovner patents on ligs, the most recent I've found is US 5,998,715, MULTI-Toned, 1999. Being among the "pioneers" , he is frequently cited in later pats, as any simple search will reveal, and the list of refs in 6,501,010 will show. Happy reading ! Don

Just downloaded their PDF for the EVO-5.
Well apparently it's dark and light at the same time while having an aesthetic appearance. WOW!
It has the characteristics of ALL Rovner's previous ligs in one. So are they still going to be selling all the others that this apparently can replace?
Did I mention it offers precise intonation?

It seems that your ligature will be two part, one small part on clarinet and much more bigger in the form of rucksack containing all that power supplies and microcomputers etc...

I get the feeling that some humorous posts contain allusions that the folks down under may not "get"...just like USA citizens dont always comprehend Brit humor...think of all the stuff we miss on Monty Python, but we still like it nonetheless.

Ginzu....commonly advertised serrated kitchen utensil set, seen on late night "infomercials" on US television...it does everything but put out the trash....and they offer extras if you order right away. .well, guess I didnt anticipate that one.
Bb throat....played with A top key and the register key middle line of treble clef staff....often fuzzy sounding ....a note that gimmicks purport to correct.
Now that is one you shouldve gotten
CPW...the MST3000 (mystery sci fi theater) of the clarinet board. (oh boy, dont ask, puleeez)

EE-gadds......I started this thread in the dark ages. Someone must have scraped the DNA and reanimated it.
Since then, of course, my newly designed ligature now includes a mic pickup and a tuner along with an optional micromini hard drive and multitrack recorder.
Oh yeah, and if you place it on a cake and ignite it, it plays "happy birthday"
And to answer the question....I did indeed try the EVO ligature. It is a variation on the same theme of fabric, a single screw, and some metal which can--if you desire--touch the reed. It makes me play just like Tony.

I have owned a Rovner EVO-5 for a few months and like it as well as my Rovner Dark. It doesnt do all the impossible things that Rovner advertizes but is fast and easy to mount reed to MP. It has a lighter tone than the Rovner Dark and can be rotated 90 degrees to get 4 slightly differant sounds that actually can be done with any ligature.

If it's too good to be true....it ain't true.
Other lessons from the old mule skinner:
1. Most of what ails us is the result of one thing.: ....there are too many people.
(thunk on that next time you encounter road rage, long check out lines, crowded highways etc)
2. Most of what ya need ta know can be learnt from watchin animals in a barnyard. (like when a stud "divorces" and gets hisself a newer mare, she has to lay claim to him by....conceiving)
3. Anyone who says "I am going to do/obtain/build, etc......(usually said by a landlord or horse boarding stable boss).." means....IT AINT GONNA HAPPEN
3a. corrollary...dont pay for promises
4. No one is irreplaceable

Yes, the EVO-5 works very well. I have one and the sound is quite similar to
my Rovner Dark. It is easy to attach, grips the mouthpiece very tightly
during clarinet changes, and has a smaller cap which actually fits in most clarinet cases. One of the things I like about Rovner ligatures is that you can reverse the screw to the opposite side for left handed use.
I find the tone with the wide strap section next to the reed to be slightly brighter than the Rovner dark with strong projection.
My only concern is that the exposed metal posts are crimped to the strap rather than being inserted into sewn loops, and I think they could slip off the strap if strongly tightened. But so far its been great.

Look up the threads a bit....yep that is what it says.
After much tinkering with a shoe shine kit, and a tip of the hat to Tim Allen.....my rottweiler now shines like a new block of ebony.
Digression, yes, but it saved me a lot in grooming charges.

Carrie..."The dream ligature fantasy talk"....a very good observation! I am just a layman who has returned to clarinet playing after many years. I have learned quite a bit the last few years from the BB posts of the many pro's, techs, teachers, dealers, young people, etc. I am still learning and experimenting with Mp's, barrels, ligatures, etc. I think its the slight differances and improvements that keeps me interested in clarinet playing. My EVO-5 is quick and easily mounted with my reed and 5RV lyre 13 MP and has a lighter tone than my Rovner Dark. I thought Steve B also had some interesting comments on the EVO-5.
